Area sports briefs: Intimidators sweep

Three Kannapolis pitchers combined to limit Hagerstown to one unearned run in a doubleheader Thursday at Municipal Stadium.
The Intimidators swept the twin bill 5-1 and 4-0 behind hurlers Charlie Leesman and Kevin Asselin. Leesman pitched the first complete game of the season for the Intimidators in the opener.
Drew Garcia had a homer, triple and single in the first game. Jon Gilmore added two hits.
Jorge Castillo’s grand slam ó the first of the season for the Intimidators ó keyed the Game 2 victory.
* Daniel Wagner had two RBIs and stole a base in Bristol’s 5-4 loss against Johnson City on Thursday in the Appalachian League.
Wagner is batting .237 with six RBIs after 10 games.
* Ogden’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) had two hits early in his game Thursday to lift his batting average to .450. Sands has four homers and nine RBIs in 10 games.
– Wood bat leagues
Justin Roland (East Rowan, Charlotte) is batting .348 in his first eight games with the Bethesda Big Train in the Cal Ripken Senior League.
* Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) is batting .350 with a homer, 15 RBIs and 18 steals for the Asheboro Copperheads.
Zach Brown (South Rowan, UNC Pembroke) is 0-2 on the mound for the Copperheads with a 3.95 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 271/3 innings.
Nathan Furr (Catawba) is 0-2 on the hill for the Copperheads with a 4.65 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 31 innings.
* Forest City’s Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) is batting .293 with two homers and 14 RBIs for a team that is 26-4 in the Coastal Plain League. Moore is 21-for-23 on stolen bases.
– Figure skating
Sisters Courtney and Heather Van Wallendael competed in figure skating in the North Carolina State Games held at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.
Courtney won a gold medal in the pre-preliminary freeskate. Heather won gold in the juvenile test track).
The girls live in Gold Hill and compete for the Carolinas Figure Skating Club.

– Hoops Unlimited
Applications are being accepted for both sessions of the 16th annual Hoops Unlimited Basketball Camp at Erwin Middle School.
The camp from July 6-9 is for boys and girls who will be in grades 2-5. The camp from July 13-16 is for boys and girls who will be in grades 6-9.
