Area sports briefs: Intimidators win

The Intimidators scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a late deadlock and beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-2 on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Kannapolis and Lakewood were knotted at 2-2 at the seventh inning stretch, but the Intimidators scored three runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to rally for victory.
Jim Murphy, who hit the game-winning home run on Friday night for the BlueClaws, saw an Eduardo Escobar groundball go through his legs to allow the winning run to come in and score. Two of the three runs scored in the seventh went as unearned.
Escobar was one of five Kannapolis hitters to record multi-hit ballgames. Jordan Cheatham led the way with a 3-for-4 effort. Sergio Morales homered for the Intimidators (18-17).
n Legion baseball
Rowan County is scheduled to open the season on Tuesday at Randolph County and to play at home on Friday against Concord.
n Minor leagues
Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Ft. Myers and had two strikeouts in a 4-3 victory against St. Lucie on Friday.
Steedley (2-0) hasn’t given up a run in five relief appearances in May and lowered his ERA to 1.04. He’s struck out 19 while walking four.
n Stockton’s David Thomas (Catawba) had a two-run triple in a 10-3 victory against High Desert on Friday.
n College baseball
Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) had a double and scored twice in Belmont Abbey’s 7-2 victory against Francis Marion on Saturday.
The win put the Crusaders in today’s Southeast Regional championship game.
n Charlotte catcher Ross Steedley (East Rowan) had shoulder surgery Tuesday. Steedley redshirted this season.
n College golf
Catawba’s Kelsey Babos shot 79-80-83-79 and finished 32 in the D-II National Championships in Findlay, Ohio.
Babos made four birdies on her final 10 holes.
Nova Southeastern won the team title.
n Prep baseball
Jordan Hudson pitched a shutout and struck out 12 batters to lead West Davidson to a 3-0 victory against South Iredell in the first round of the 2A playoffs on Saturday.
Joe Patterson hit a three-run homer for the Green Dragons (21-4).
n Keaton Hawks pitched East Davidson to a 12-4 first-round victory against Bessemer City. Ryan Coleman homered for the Golden Eagles.
n Knox Gunter homered for Providence Grove in a 5-4 loss to East Lincoln.
Jarrett Ross knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
n Davie will make up its 4A playoff game at East Forsyth on Monday.
n East Rowan will play host to Parkland in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Tuesday.
n Prep softball
The 3A state playoffs begin Tuesday. East Rowan will be at home against the No. 5 seed from the SPC. West Rowan will be on the road against the No. 1 seed from the Big South.
n Myers golf tourneyThe 15th Annual Adam Myers Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 20 at McCanless.
Play starts at 9 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m. The cost is $50 per person or $200 per team.
