From staff reports
A.L. Brown’s six-run first inning stunned Carson’s baseball team, but the Cougars had a pretty good answer.
They put up 11 in the bottom of the first, sending 16 men to the plate.
“We were a little shellshocked after the top of the first,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said. “The plan was to try and cut the deficit in half. We exceeded that goal.”
Carson set school records for runs in an inning and a game.
Tyler Freeze banged out four hits and knocked in five runs. He hit Carson’s first homer of the season in the first and nearly hit two homers in the frame when the Cougars (7-1) batted around. His second at-bat produced a ringing double that struck the top of the fence and fell back into play.
“Freeze didn’t want to leave the field when we were done,” Cauble said. “He had that good a night.”
Julio Zubillaga chipped in with three hits. Gunnar Hogan scored three runs. Kenny Karriker hit a two-run homer. Weston Snow was the winning pitcher in relief.
Zach Jones had two RBIs for Brown (3-7). Quin Gill went 2-for-2. Brown stole seven bases, including three by Wes Honeycutt.
* Tyler Westall hit two homers as unbeaten West Stanly topped Salisbury 9-0. Philip Tonseth and Jordan Fuller had the only hits for the Hornets. Freshman Nolan Meyerhoeffer pitched well for the Hornets but took the loss.
“We played solid defense today,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. “If we do that, we’ll give ourselves a chance to win.”
– Parnell update
East Rowan graduate Bobby Parnell, who on Tuesday learned he had made the New York Mets’ opening-day roster as a reliever, improved to 2-0 this spring during a 5-2 victory against St. Louis on Wednesday.
Johan Santana pitched the first three innings, and Parnell allowed one hit in a scoreless fourth. He struck out a batter and walked one. He lowered his ERA to 2.02.
A story on Parnell will appear in Friday’s Post.
– Catawba baseball
Catawba lost a doubleheader at Barton Wednesday, falling 10-5 and 12-5.
Josh Hohn was 4-for-4 for the Indians (19-11) in the opener. Ryan Query had two RBIs.
Craige Lyerly and Chris Ahearn homered in the nightcap.
– Prep soccer
Allison Lee and Madison Kennedy scored two goals each for Salisbury in Monday’s 8-0 CCC win against North Rowan.
Laurel Loeblein, Sierra Davis, Marlee Murphy and Taylor Slate scored a goal each.
“Slate’s goal was brilliant,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “Perfect header off a corner.”
Katherine Heidt and Kennedy had two assists each. Davis and Jenna Bryan had one. Mally Fisher and Taylor Capito had their first assists as varsity players.
* West Rowan (5-4) lost a heartbreaker when Mooresville scored in the last minute of the game to take a 1-0 NPC victory Wednesday at Catawba. Outstanding defensive performances were turned in by West midfielder Abbie Wilson and sweeper Allison Parker.
“I am very pleased with everyone’s effort,” West coach Nick Brown said. “We are still learning to play well under pressure. It was a great game between very competitive teams.”
West plays at Davie today.

Madelyn File was second in the discus (91-2). The 4×800 relay team consisting of Jenny Hughes, Katie Cassady, Megan Linke and Ashley-Kate Kesler finished second in 11:26.
* Sierra Zemanick was the highest finisher for Carson. She ran 2:35.9 in the 800.
– Middle school golf
Salisbury Academy golfers tied for second in a quad match held at Indian Valley Golf Club in Burlington.
Burlington Christian (180) outdistanced Salisbury Academy (190), Wesleyan Christian (190) and River Mill (214).
