Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball wins

Freshman Corey Parker had three hits and senior Chris Ahearn had a pair of RBI triples, including the go-ahead hit with two outs in the sixth, to help Catawba rally past Stillman for a 5-4 season-opening win Friday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Down 4-3 entering the sixth, Jake Faggart drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a one-out single by Parker. After a deep fly out by Craige Lyerly, Ahearn tripled into right center to score Parker with the eventual winning run.
Catawba starter Blake Ketner grabbed the win, tossing six innings of four-hit ball with no walks and four strikeouts. Closer Nathan Furr fanned three in the ninth to earn the save.
Josh Hohn had two hits.
Catawba scored three times in the first. Lyerly and Ahearn had back-to-back triples, and Ryan Query knocked in Ahearn with a groundout for a 2-0 edge. Catawba picked up a third run after a pair of one-out singles and a two-out error.
n Prep hoops
Carson’s varsity basketball teams were swept by Lake Norman.
Carson’s girls fell 49-20.
The Cougars also lost by a large margin in the boys game รณ a final score wasn’t available.
“We didn’t play well, and they’re good,” Carson boys coach Brian Perry said. “They were on their game, and they took advantage of every mistake we made.”
nA.L. Brown’s boys put five players in double figures and beat Hickory Ridge 76-69 on Friday.
DeMarcus Phifer led the way with 16 points. Jacob Newman scored 15 and grabbed 13 rebounds. Zach Massey had 15 points, Xavier Watson added 12 and T.J. Johnson posted 11.
The balanced attack of the Wonders (11-6, 9-4 SPC) pleased coach Shelwyn Klutz.
“There isn’t one player you can focus on,” he said. “That’s going to help us.”
nDavie freshman Shannon Dillard shined in his first varsity start, but the War Eagles lost 78-67 to Reynolds in CPC action.
The 6-foot-5 Dillard finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. He was one of four War Eagles in double figures as Jamal Mayfield had 14, Landon Harris scored 13 and Drew Absher had 11.
A 3-pointer from Absher pulled Davie (5-16, 1-7) with four in the fourth quarter, but it could get no closer to the Demons (11-8, 3-4).
Davie was hurt by the absence of James Mayfield. The senior has a sprained ankle.
– A Northwest Cabarrus turnover allowed North Iredell to tie the game at the end of regulation, but the Trojans took control in overtime to win 81-75.
Juwan Reid led Northwest (16-5, 12-4) with 15 points. Garrett West chipped in with 14.
n Jayvee hoops
West Rowan’s jayvee boys won 64-38 against Statesville. The leading scorers were Kajuan Phillips (13 points), Maurice Warren (nine), Kevin Turner (eight), John Dunlap (seven) and Dinkin Miller (six).
West’s jayvee girls won 30-20. Brittney Barber had 14 points, and Alison Dutton scored 13.
n Seventh-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls beat Knox 45-27.
The undefeated Eagles (3-0, 2-0) led by as many as 27 points.
Lauren Thomas scored 20 points for Erwin. Karleigh Wike had 12 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks. Josie McNeely ran the offense, scored 12 points and had four steals. Haley Hepburn had eight rebounds, and Katie Kepley grabbed seven boards.
Knox (2-1) was led by Brielle Blaire with 16 points. Nyasia Harris had nine points for the Trojans.
n Knox’s boys beat Erwin 49-25.
Jaquez Finger scored 10 points for the Trojans (2-1). Anthony Angle scored eight, John Canipe had six and Tony Kreider added five.
Erwin (0-3, 0-2) was led by Donte Means with eight points and Doc Corpening with seven.
– North Rowan’s boys beat Corriher-Lipe 57-8.
Mike Connor scored 14 for North, followed by Michael Bonnor with nine. Jaquan Brown and and Michael Bost each had eight. Takeo Gill chipped in with six.
– The China Grove girls remained unbeaten with a 32-19 win over West Rowan.
Katie Cole led the way with 11 points, while Lynsey Corriher had 10. Katie Barringer added six and Nicole Mauldin scored five for China Grove (2-0).
n Homeschool Stallions
Tim Coleman exploded for 40 points as the Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool boys varsity team beat Asheville 74-63 on Friday.
Coleman hit seven 3-pointers and had 12 rebounds for the Stallions (14-9). They extended their winning streak to five games. Kyle Kiker added 10 points.
– The varsity girls got 28 points from Hannah Holm in a 41-31 win over Asheville.
Holm had 15 and Nikki Milo scored 10 in an earlier 45-35 win over the Davidson Homeschoolers. Erica Hyatt had 18 for Davidson.
– The jayvee boys beat Asheville 70-52 behind Jason Long’s 22 points. The Stallions (15-4) got 17 from Andrew Kelly and 11 from Sam Nelson.
The jayvees beat Davidson 81-44 as John Clay scored 22 points. Kelly and Ben Morgan each had 12. Bradley Yates had 25 for Davidson.
– The middle-school Stallions lost 46-27 to Asheville 46-27 and fell to 9-12. Jordan Long had 14 points.
The middle schoolers beat Davidson 35-17. Corbin Riley had seven points. Colby Hensen and Spencer Bare (two 3s) had six apiece.
