Catawba’s men’s basketball team plays at Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn., tonight at 8 p.m.
Ranked 11th in the latest NABC poll, the Indians (13-3, 5-0) have a chance to solidify their grip on first place in the SAC against second-place Lincoln Memorial (9-7, 4-2).
Lincoln Memorial has been tough at home. the Railsplitters are 3-0 in SAC home games, notching victories against Wingate, Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne.
D’Mario Curry, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Detroit, leads the Railsplitters. He averages 17.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
Stuart Miller, a 6-0 guard, is the other player to watch for the Railsplitters. A transfer from Louisville, he was one of the top scorers in Kentucky high school history with 2,519 points and 475 3-pointers.
Antonio Houston leads the Indians.
n Catawba’s women (10-6, 2-3) open the twin bill at 6 p.m.
The only SAC team Lincoln Memorial (6-10, 1-5) has beaten is last-place Brevard.
Most of the Railsplitters are recruits from Indiana high schools, including double-figure scorers Stephanie Wagner, Andi Winney and Amberly O’Dell.
Brittany Higgins leads the Indians.
n N.C. Hall of Fame
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame has announced six honorees in its Class of 2009.
Appalachian State football coach Jerry Moore, N.C. State running back and North Carolina A&T athletics director Willie Burden, UNC women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell, former Wake Forest basketball coach Dave Odom, ACC commissioner John Swofford and golfer Roger Watson will be enshrined on May 14 in Raleigh.
Established in 1963, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame is located on the third floor of the N.C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.
n Prep basketball
Tuesday’s prep basketball games were postponed by wintry weather.
n Providence Grove-Salisbury games were rescheduled for Jan. 28.
n West Rowan-Mooresville games were rescheduled for Feb. 4.
n North Rowan-Lexington games were postponed, but no reschedule has been announced yet.
n Tonight’s scheduled Carson-Northwest Cabarrus basketball games and wrestling match have been pushed back to Thursday.
n Prep indoor track
Local athletes competed in the Eastern Challenge held in Chapel Hill.
Among the highlights:
North Rowan’s Teaunna Cuthbertson was fifth in the long jump (17-11/2 inches) and seventh in the 55 hurdles (8.74 seconds).
North’s Jalesa Stalling was 14th in the triple jump (31-101/2) and 22nd in the long jump (14-43/4).
North’s Yasarian Bush was 14th in the long jump (15-10).
North’s Dirika Mitchell was sixth in the shot (34-31/2).
n South Rowan’s B.J. Grant was eight in the high jump (5-10).
Dalton Johnson, Nathaniel Winslow, Tyler Kowalczyk and Michael York were 18th in the 4×800 relay.
n East Rowan pole vaulter Jesse Brown was 13th (11-2).
n West Rowan’s Trey Mashore was 11th in the long jump (20-71/2).
n College women’s hoops
Tracey Croner (East Rowan) had a spectacular game for Guilford with 27 points and a career-best 17 rebounds in a 70-61 loss against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
Croner scored 13 points, nine after halftime, in a 71-63 win against Emory & Henry on Tuesday.
n Brittany Cornelius (East) had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists for Meredith in an 83-60 loss against Greensboro on Monday.
n Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 12 points for South Carolina State in a 64-46 loss to Howard on Monday.
n College men’s basketball
Towson’s Junior Hairston (West Rowan) ranks among Colonial Athletic Association leaders in many categories.
Hairston is second in blocks (2.1 per game), eighth in rebounding (6.6) and 14th in scoring (12.6).
Hairston is 11th in field-goal percentage, 10th in free-throw percentage and 13th in steals.
n Michael Gore (South Rowan) had six points and five rebounds for Coker in an 89-77 loss to Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
n Wesley Honeycutt (South) averages 5.2 points a game for Davidson County Community College.
n Crowder honored
Pfeiffer’s James Crowder was named Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Crowder averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, shot 53 percent on 3s and threw down several momentum-changing dunks.
n Curry honored
Davidson junior guard Stephen Curry has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time. No surprise there.
n College indoor track
Appalachian State’s Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) won the triple jump (48 feet, 83/4 inches) in the Appalachian Open and placed third in the long jump (22-21/4).
n ASU’s Phillip Bush was second in the long jump (22-31/2), fourth in the 55 hurdles (7.71) and fifth in the 200 (22.55 seconds).
n Also in the App Invitational, Western Carolina’s Daniel Joseph (NW Cabarrus) was third in the triple jump (45-61/4) and 10th in the long jump.
n Western’s Ryan Pless (East Rowan) was third in the shot put (48-10).
n Also in the App Invitational, UNC Asheville senior Dane Corriher (South Rowan) was fourth with a career best in the 400 (49.98).
n In the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech, Jason Jones (East) was third in the shot (54-21/2).
A week earlier, Jones won both the shot (55-9) and weight throw (54-8) at the Tar Heel Invitational.
Wolfpack newcomer Lamont Savage (West Rowan) was second in the long jump (23-101/4) and fifth in the triple jump (44-8) at the Tar Heel Invitational.
n Freshman thrower Nolan Stehr (East) is on the N.C. State team.
n Also at the Hokie Invitational, Charlotte’s Makenzie Mullinax (South) tied for sixth in the pole vault (10-21/2).
n College swimming
Freshman Gavin Spake (West Davidson) won the 200 free (1:44.20) and placed second in the 200 butterfly and 400 IM to help UNC Wilmington defeat William & Mary 214-85 on Saturday.
n College gymnastics
Navy’s Dylan Parrott (South Rowan) was sixth all-around in the West Point Open.
Parrott placed second in the floor exercise and was third on the high bar.
n College baseball
Wake Forest freshman infielder/outfielder Micah Jarrett (East Rowan) and Wake teammate Zach White, a lefty pitcher from North Davidson, will play for the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League this summer.
n N.C. State junior outfielder Wade Moore (West Rowan) plans to return to the Forest City Owls this summer.
Moore could get his first opportunity to play regularly for the Wolfpack next month. He’s been a standout in wood-bat summer leagues and was an all-star for Forest City in the CPL last summer. He also starred for the Florence Red Wolves in the CPL in the summer of 2007.
n Catawba opens Feb. 4 against Barton with a roster bolstered by the addition of Appalachian State transfers Jake Faggart, an outfielder, and Trevor Mullins, a pitcher.
West Rowan’s Zeb Link and Brett Hatley, East Rowan’s Craige Lyerly, North Rowan’s Kevin McMillan, A.L. Brown’s Ryan Query and Northwest Cabarrus’ Blake Ketner are among the returners for coach Jim Gantt.
n Stallions basketball
The Cabarrus-Rowan Stallions varsity boys basketball team lost to Forsyth Home Education 80-60. K.P. Hicks (19), Christian Hicks (17) and Caleb Dietz (10) scored in double digits for the Stallions.
n Spencer Little League
Spencer Little League will hold baseball and softball registration at 8th Street Ballpark on Fridays, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 from 4-8 p.m., and Saturdays Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 from 9-1.
