Da’Sean Butler scored 16 points ó all but two in the first half ó with Darryl Bryant adding 11 and Devin Ebanks 10 for the Mountaineers (10-2), who handed Ohio State its first defeat of the season. West Virginia has won four in a row since a 68-65 loss to Davidson in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 9.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ó Maryland cruised to its fifth straight victory, defeating Bryant 72-51 behind a strong defensive performance and the contributions of backcourt mates Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes.

NEW YORK ó Jack McClinton scored all of his 20 points in the game’s first 261/2 minutes and James Dews had seven of his nine in a 9-0 second-half run as Miami beat St. John’s 70-56 at Madison Square Garden.

UNIONDALE, N.Y ó Rick DiPietro returned to the New York Islanders’ lineup, starting against Toronto after missing 27 games following his second knee surgery in five months.
Coming off surgery on his right knee in June, DiPietro had appeared in only three games this season, the last a one-period stint against Carolina on Oct. 25. He had arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 31 to repair a torn meniscus, but the Islanders wouldn’t reveal which knee was injured.
– ST. LOUIS ó St. Louis Blues left wing Paul Kariya will have surgery on his left hip and could miss the rest of the season, the latest hit for a franchise beset by injuries to key players.
The 34-year-old Kariya hasn’t played since Nov. 5 in Anaheim, when his body was wrenched by a hit from behind and he tore muscle fibers near the top of his thigh.
ARRESTED
WALPOLE, Mass. ó Former New England Patriots player and high school football coach Danny Villa surrendered to police in his native Arizona on Saturday, one day after a court in Massachusetts issued a warrant for his arrest on charges that he raped a child.
Walpole Police Chief Richard Stillman said Villa surrendered to authorities. He faces three counts of rape of a child over 14 and three counts of enticing a minor.
Villa led one of the most successful high school football programs in the state, capping an undefeated season with a championship earlier this month.
He played offensive line in the NFL for 12 seasons, including six with the Patriots.
SKATING
WEST ALLIS, Wis. ó Chad Hedrick edged rival Shani Davis in a 5,000-meter race on Saturday after Davis had beaten him earlier in the 500 at the U.S. Long Track Speedskating National Championships at the Pettit National Ice Center.
Skating in the same pairing, Hedrick won the 5,000 in 6 minutes, 26.76 seconds, well off his Pettit Center record of 6:16.23 set on Oct. 26. Davis was second in 6:28.07.
BASEBALL
CINCINNATI ó Willy Taveras and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a two-year contract, filling the team’s need for a center fielder and leadoff hitter.
