CHINA GROVE ó Car should have been thinking nothing but layups with a fourth-quarter lead, but sophomore Demya Heggins let fly with a 17-footer from the left side.
No, no, no! Oh, nice shot.
Heggins was that aggressive all game and made everything she put up.
“Go hard or don’t play at all,” Heggins said. “It felt great to see the shots go in.”
Heggins scored 18 points in her varsity debut and led the Cougars to a 49-35 victory over North Rowan.
“Demya came with a burst of energy and got us going,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “Our focus was to be the aggressors.”
Kaylene Livengood had 11 boards and helped Carson survive 41 turnovers.
The Cougars (1-1) set a school record for points and won for the third time ever.
Junior guard Jazzmin Brown had a hot hand for the Cougars early and keyed an 11-0 first-quarter run that gave her team control.
North senior Quon Cuthbertson nearly posted a triple double with 14 points, 10 boards and eight steals, but the Cougars owned the boards and got the loose balls.
Freshman Teaunna Cuthbertson scored 13 for North.
“We made a valiant effort, but we made too many turnovers,” new North coach Tony Hillian said. “We’ve got to be more patient.
