East Rowan’s soccer team beat West Rowan 4-2 for its first victory of the season on Thursday.
Micah Cook scored on a penalty kick for a 1-0 West lead. East answered with a combination play when Nathan Upright crossed a ball from the left corner that Levi Huffman put in the back of the net.
Will Mancil’s penalty kick put East ahead 2-1 at halftime.
John Owen found the back of the net on a bouncing cross from Levi Huffman for a 3-1 East lead. After Daniel Waggoner cut West’s deficit to 3-2, Upright found Huffman again on a cross from the left side for insurance.
“It was a well-deserved win,” East coach John McNeil said. “The boys finished balls coming across the face of the goal. It was a good night for this young team as things came together for us.”
n Salisbury lost 2-0 to East Lincoln in a non-conference match.
CCC leader Salisbury (8-4) played well against a likely 2A playoff opponent, but had trouble finishing. The Hornets hit the crossbar four times.
“Probably our best match of the year tactically and physically, except for the finishes,” SHS coach Tom Sexton said. “I was proud of the level of play and we showed playoff intensity. We got exactly what we wanted ó except for the win.”
Salisbury’s match scheduled for Wednesday at Central Davidson was postponed because of wet conditions.
n NPC golf
Lake Norman won an NPC golf match played at McCanless on Thursday.
Hayley Hammond shot 37 to lead the Wildcats to a 125 total.
South Rowan shot 138 for second place. Desirae Overcash shot 41, Lauren Helms 47 and Courtney Barbee 50.
West Rowan placed fifth at 143. Alex Mills shot 44. Katie Knepp had a 48, and Ashlyn Perry finished at 51.
East Rowan’s Samantha Haviland shot a 47. Morgan Thrift shot 55.
n Jayvee football
A stout defensive effort led by Tre Jackson, Tion McCain, Rico Allison, Kavari Hillie and Edward Cathcart sparked Salisbury to a 12-0 victory at East Davidson on Thursday.
Dejoun Jones scored on an 18-yard pass from Riley Gallagher and on a 7-yard run for the Hornets (3-2, 2-0).
n A.L. Brown beat Parkwood 27-8 at home to stay undefeated.
Keenan Williamson, Demetrius Jackson, Martel Campbell and Xavier Stanback found the end zone for the Wonders (6-0), who rushed for 174 yards and passed for 101.
Linebacker Ryan Blackmon led Brown’s defense.
n Catawba soccer
Catawba’s men’s soccer team scored twice in the final 15 minutes to beat SAC rival Wingate 2-1 at Frock Field on Thursday.
Catawba (3-6, 1-1) got goals from Alex Koslick and Kevin Sorensen and two assists from Carter Richardson.
Catawba played without starters David Bloom and Chad Villiard, who were red-carded in the previous match with Mars Hill.
n Middle school football
Southeast’s Greg Tonneson threw a touchdown pass to Jack Gallagher in overtime to tie the game, then tossed a game-winning two-point conversion to Justin Evans for a 28-26 victory against West Rowan Middle.
It was Southeast’s first football victory over the Bulldogs.
K.J. Pressley and Tyler Stamp caught touchdown passes from Marquise Drummer, and Travis Abbitt had a rushing touchdown for the undefeated Patriots.
Jacob Tomlin and Kaz Ivanov had key fumble recoveries for the Southeast defense.
Southeast players dedicated the victory to the memory of teacher Marilyn Webb.
n China Grove’s eighth-graders outscored North Rowan Middle 38-30.
Connor Bridges scored on runs of 60, 11 and 8 yards for the Red Devils.
Eric Tyler threw two touchdown passes, a 60-yarder to Bridges and an 18-yard strike to Jacob Morrison. Tyler also had a rushing PAT and intercepted a pass.
Standouts on defense for the Devils included Morrison, Tyler, Josh Medlin, Tyler Arnott, Devin Mason, Clint Meec, Bubba McLaughlin and Eric Tyler.
n Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies participated in the annual Mary Cobb McCombs Member-Member Tournament celebrating the founding of the Ladies Golf Association in 1960 by Mary and husband Gaither McCombs.
The winner of the Best Ball net tournament was the team of Faye Cline and Carolynn Ries. They were followed by Becky Isenhour and Susan Morris, Donna DeVlieger and Donna Loman, and Bev Cobb and Eileen Full.
Low gross went to the team of Phyllis Durland and Wanda Sanders.
n Gealy ninth in tourney
Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 68-67-71 ó 206 and finished ninth in the Tar Heel Tour Columbia Open. He won $2,700.
n North Rowan boosters
The North Rowan High School Booster Club will meet Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in the media center. All members and guests are encouraged to attend.
