Area briefs: Rowan Amateur tees off

A field of 32 will tee off today to decide the champion of 30th Horace Billings Rowan County Amateur golf tournament at Corbin Hills.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday. The winner will be decided Sunday afternoon.
Defending champion Keith Dorsett will face Chris Sifford in the opening match today at 2:46 p.m.
Qualifying medalist Stan Honeycutt will meet Jeff Quan in his first match.
Pairings are in Scoreboard.
– Junior Legion wins
Rowan County’s Junior Legion baseball team finished a 3-0 sweep of Kernersville with an 8-3 victory at Newman Park on Thursday and secured a spot in the state tournament that starts in Kinston on Wednesday.
Rowan starting pitcher Will Johnson held Kernersville to two runs in five innings, and Luke Thomas hit a home run for coach Brian Hightower’s 23-4 squad.
– AAU basketball
Salisbury-Rowan Kings basketball team has qualified for the AAU Nationals in Orlando on July 26-31.
The Kings have entered five tournaments and have posted an 11-4 record.
The Kings are faced with meeting transportation, lodging, and meal fees totalling $9,046 and have raised $6,196, leaving them $2850 short of their goal.

– Leonard honored
Central Davidson pitcher Chelsea Leonard has been named to play in the Under Armour All-America high school softball game in Orlando, Fla.
The game includes 30 of the nation’s top prep players. Leonard had a 29-0 record, 0.14 ERA and 439 strikeouts as a junior.
– Smith named coach
Ledford has elevated assistant Kemp Smith to replace Chris Adams as head baseball coach. Smith starred as a player for the Panthers.
– Junior Mac golf
The third Junior Mac summer golf tournament was played at McCanless on Thursday.
Nick Lyerly shot 42 to win the 9-under division. Bryson Sprinkle shot 45.
In the 10-13 division, Logan Shuping shot 42 to win. Evan Neas shot 43.
The next tournament is July 31.
– Intimidators lose
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost to Charleston 7-5 in 11 innings on Thursday. Bradley Suttle’s two-run homer won it for the RiverDogs.
