RALEIGH ó South Carolina knew it needed a quick start against a potent Charlotte lineup. Boy, did the Gamecocks get one.
DeAngelo Mack and James Darnell each homered Friday, and South Carolina scored the first nine runs of its 15-8 rout of the 49ers at the Raleigh Regional.
Justin Smoak had four hits and three RBIs for the second-seeded Gamecocks (39-21).
Aaron Bray, Rob Lyerly and Alan Parks homered for the 49ers (43-15).

RALEIGH ó Ryan Pond’s tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning led North Carolina State past James Madison 6-2 Friday night in the Raleigh Regional.
Chris Schaeffer and Drew Martin homered for the top-seeded Wolfpack (39-20), who snapped a three-year string of losses in their NCAA tournament openers. They advance to face second-seeded South Carolina in the championship bracket. No. 4 seed James Madison (38-18) slips into an elimination game against Charlotte.
