Jim Tomsula, former Catawba player and assistant coach, has been named defensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

Tomsula has a great track record at Catawba and as a head coach and defensive coordinator in NFL Europe.

Pfeiffer splits

The Pfeiffer men’s basketball team lost at Limestone 70-68 on Thursday on a last-second tip-in by John Prioleau.

Tavares Cooper had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead Pfeiffer (13-4, 7-3 CVAC).

Robert McGriff added 13 points and eight rebounds.

* Lauren Brittingham scored 23 points to lead Pfeiffer’s women (13-4, 8-2) to a 72-67 victory over Limestone.

CPC swimming

West Forsyth’s boys and Mount Tabor’s girls took victories in the CPC swim meet held Thursday at Winston-Salem State.

Both Davie County teams finished fourth. East’s boys were fifth, and the Mustang girls were sixth. South’s boys were sixth, and the Raider girls were seventh.

South’s Cody Buchanan finished third in the 100 backstroke. He was the only Rowan swimmer to post a top-three finish.

Davie’s Autumn Jones won the 200 IM and 100 free, and teammate Taylor Moore had a pair of top-three finishes.

Daniel Wendel and Drew Esposito had second-place finishes for Davie’s boys.

Middle school hoops

Knox’s eighth-grade boys basketball team finished 13-0 and will be the top seed for the conference tournament.

Knox players are Darrien Rankin, Romar Morris, Alex Weant, Devonte Horne and Chris Rankin, J.J. Watkins, Forrest Wilkins, Riley Gallagher, Corey Thompson, D.J. Lewis, Rasheem Samaroo, Demetrius Hopper, Lewis Young and Ray Wiseman.

* West Rowan Middle’s eighth-grade boys topped North Rowan Middle 48-18.

John Knox, John Dunlap and B.J. Sherrill scored eight points apiece for the Bulldogs (12-2). Javon Hargrave scored nine for the Mavericks (1-11).

West also beat Corriher-Lipe 40-36. Knox and Domonique Noble scored 10 points apiece. Mark McDaniels scored 14 for the Yellow Jackets.

* Erwin’s seventh-grade boys beat Southeast 56-25 in a conference opener. Erwin was led by Weston Rogers with 11 points. Ben Burdon had eight points for Southeast.

Erwin’s seventh-grade girls beat the Patriots 23-19. Samantha Jacobs had 11 rebounds for the Eagles, and Sydney Safrit had six points. Chloe Monroe scored seven for Southeast.

Erwin wrestlers win

Erwin’s wrestling team defeated Knox 72-21 and won the Rowan County Middle School championship.

Erwin (11-1) tied the school record for victories and won its fourth straight county championship.

Erwin’s Cody Sisk (8-0), Michael Pounds (5-0), Kory Shaffer (11-1), Will Stephenson (10-1), C.J. Cain (10-1), Colton Merritt (10-2), Alexx Sousa (10-2), Kendall Morgan (9-2) and Zach Brown (8-2) had outstanding records. The conference tourney is at Knox Saturday.
