Two seventh-grade soccer players from Sacred Heart make it to the Olympic Development Program sub-regional event to be held at Frank Liske Park on Jan. 20-21.

Allison Baucom and Connor Miller are classmates at Sacred Heart, and both play club soccer for FC Carolina Alliance out of Concord.

Baucom is a field player in the player pool for the 93 Girls team. Miller is a goalkeeper in the 94 West boys player pool.

Both will take part in games at the sub-regional event against teams from Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia and South Carolina.

Sparks to head AFCA

Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks will be president of the American Football Coaches Association this year.

Sparks was elected to his post at a convention this week in San Antonio.

North Stanly booster meeting

The next North Stanly Booster Club meeting is on Monday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in the school media center.

Parks & Rec registers players

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration at Hall Gym for its girls Jr. Sting (ages 7-15) and Jr. Bobcat (ages 5-6) programs through Friday.

The cost is $30 for city residents and $60 for non-residents. All participants need to bring a birth certificate.

East Y hoops program

The East Rowan YMCA is registering for its high school boys basketball program until Feb. 3.

The program is for grades 9-12. Practice begins Feb. 12. The season starts Feb. 24.

The cost is $35 for Y members and $58 for non-members. Late registration will cost an extra $10.

New look for Deep South lacrosse

The Deep South Conference lacrosse league will have a new look in 2007, with five members — Catawba, Mars Hill, Presbyterian, Saint Leo (Fla.) and Wingate.

Last summer, the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference voted to sponsor men’s lacrosse. As a result, former Deep South members Belmont Abbey, Lees-McRae , Limestone, Pfeiffer, Queens and St. Andrews will now compete in the CVAC.

North Hills Middle girls fall

North Hills lost 20-18 to Success Institute in middle school girls basketball. Laura Butner scored nine points to lead the Eagles (6-3).

CCC basketball

Boomie Luck scored 16 points to lead East Davidson’s unbeaten girls to a 66-29 win over CCC foe Lexington on Wednesday.

* Warren Holmes scored 13 points as Lexington’s boys pounded East Davidson 76-43.
