Erwin, North Rowan split in hoops

Javon Hargrave scored 22 points to lead North Rowan Middle’s eighth-grade basketball team to a 45-40 win over Erwin.

Deviant McCluney scored nine points for the Mavericks (1-9, 1-7), and Sam Starks had eight.

Will Johnson led Erwin (1-8, 1-7) with 17 points. Dakota Tilley had 12.

Erwin won the girls game 39-27. Taylor Honeycutt (nine points, five steals) and Olivia Sabo (eight points, seven boards) led the Eagles (5-4, 5-3). Mariah Gregory led North (3-7, 2-6) with 17 points.

* Boyden wrestling

A story on the Boyden wrestling program’s 66-match winning streak in the 1960s will appear in Sunday’s Lifestyle section.

* N.C. Central crowned CIAA champ N.C. Central has been declared the Sheridan Broadcasting Network black college football national champion, the school’s first such title in 33 years of the poll.

NCCU received 21 of 30 first-place votes. Offensive lineman Mack Ellis (North) is on the squad.

* East wrestlers win

East Rowan’s wrestling team beat Reynolds 63-12 in a CPC opener.

C.J. Gordy, Alex Lawson, Joe Knox, Donovan Smoot, Thomas Lowe, Wayne Parker, Aaron Plyler, Josiah Hurst, Aaron French, Chase Burris and Keng Lor recorded wins for the Mustangs (12-1).

* Patterson shines

Avery Patterson (A.L. Brown) scored 23 points to lead St. John’s to a 68-50 victory against NJIT.

* Catawba women win

Catawba’s women’s basketball team earned a split on its trip to Honolulu by beating BYU-Hawaii 76-61. Ne’Keithia Howard led Catawba (9-2) with 14 points. Brittany Higgins had 12 on 6-for-8 shooting, and Hillary Hampton (West Rowan) scored 10 points.
