Northwest Cabarrus’ unbeaten boys basketball team topped A.L. Brown 66-58 in a non-conference game on Wednesday at Bullock Gym.

Jon Hathcock led the Trojans (4-0) with 17 points.

Jonathan Efird scored 15 points for the Wonders (3-2), and Josh Gray added 12.

Brown lost its first game of the season on Tuesday when it was pounded 93-53 by Central Cabarrus. J.D. Davidson led the Wonders with 14 points.

Brown’s girls lost to Central 55-26.

Northwest’s girls are off to a 4-0 start after nipping the Wonders last night.

Catawba men at home tonight

Catawba’s men’s basketball team returns to action tonight at 7 when it takes on Montreat at Goodman Gym.

Montreat (5-6) is on a three-game winning streak.

Catawba (1-4) will be led by Antonio Houston (16.8 points a game), Chris Wooldridge (15.4) and Brian Graves (11.6).

Pfeiffer basketball

Pfeiffer’s undefeated men’s basketball team has moved up to No. 14 in Division II in the latest NABC poll.

Pfeiffer (6-0, 3-0 CVAC) has been led by senior DeMario Grier, who was recently named CVAC Player of the Week for the second straight week. Grier averaged 22.4 points in CVAC wins over Coker and Belmont Abbey.

Tavares Cooper (16.6 points a game) and Logan Call (14.0) have also been scoring in bunches for the Falcons. Cooper is shooting 68 percent from the field.

* Pfeiffer’s Kalee Smith is the CVAC Player of the Week for women’s basketball. Smith averaged 16.5 points and 12 rebounds in wins over Belmont Abbey and Coker.

East girls win doubles

East Rowan’s Hannah Kovach and Emilee Smith won the 16-year-old doubles championship at the USTA Concord Tennis Association’s Quest for the Best tournament over the weekend.

Erwin wrestlers keep rolling

Erwin beat Southeast 60-30 in Rowan County Middle School Conference wrestling.

It was the 25th straight win for the Eagles against county opposition.

There will be a matchup of unbeatens when Erwin (4-0) wrestles at China Grove at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

West Middle girls win

West Rowan Middle’s eighth-grade girls basketball team rolled over Corriher-Lipe 53-23.

Ayanna Avery had 20 points for the Bulldogs and also led in assists.

Leighana Watson, Isis Miller, Breann Lambert, Taylor Koppe and Diamond Price added four points each for the Bulldogs. Price led the rebounding.

Marissa Sellers scored 14 points for the Yellow Jackets and hit two 3-pointers.

SAC coaching moves

Adrian Blewitt, men’s soccer coach at Lenoir-Rhyne, will now head up the women’s program as well as the men’s program.

Croner has career night

Guilford’s Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 22 of her career-high 26 points in the second half as the Quakers rallied to beat Emory & amp; Henry 70-57 in women’s basketball on Wednesday.

West baseball camp

West Rowan coach David Wright will hold a baseball camp for ages 5-15 on Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The cost is $30.

The camp is limited to 35 players.

Instructors will include Jack Moore, a member of the National Pitching Association.

Sacred Heart tourney

The 15th Annual Sacred Heart Christmas Basketball Tournament will be held at Knox Middle School this Friday and Saturday.

Girls and boys teams from North Hills, Statesville Christian, Greensboro Covenant and Sacred Heart will participate.

Friday’s games will include a Statesville-North Hills doubleheader, with the girls starting at 4:30 and the boys at 5:45.

Sacred Heart’s girls will play Covenant at 7 p.m., and the Sacred Heart boys will take on Convenant at 8:15.

Consolation games start Saturday at 9:30 a.m. There will be a cheerleading exhibition at noon.

The girls championship game will be played at 12:30, with the boys championship game set for 1:45.

Turkey shoots

Turkey shoots are being held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays at the Faith Jaycee Ballpark.

Cost is $3 a shot. Prizes to choose from are five pounds of sausage, a slab of side meat or a canned ham. Contact Don Kiker at 704-279-6346.

South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations for its boys basketball and Little Shooters programs through Dec.9. Boys basketball is for grades 3-8 and Little Shooters is for boys and girls grades 1-2.
