CHARLOTTE – Hubert Calvin Whitaker, 88, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Oakdale Heights in Charlotte following several months of declining health. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Mr. Whitaker was born in Bristow, Okla., a son of the late Ben Whitaker and Maggie Flynn Whitaker. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Hendersonville, where he was raised. He graduated from Flat Rock High School and served as a Seaman 1st Class with the U.S. Navy. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Following his discharge from the service, he later resided in Salisbury and Shelby prior to moving to the Charlotte area seven years ago. He retired from Duke Power as a power house mechanic following many years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Martha & quot;Delno & quot; Clayton Whitaker; daughter Dianne Keller and husband Steve of Charlotte; son Kenneth Calvin Whitaker and wife Joni of Ashburn, Va.; sisters Dorothy Moody and Elizabeth Connor, both of Hendersonville; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Service: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Thos. Shepherd & amp; Son Funeral Directors, Church Street Chapel. The Rev. Bill Tinsley will officiate. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park with graveside military honors being conducted by members of Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post 5206 and Chapter 14 of the DAV. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Visitation: The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;An online guest register is available at www.thosshepherd.com
