MOCKSVILLE— Parker Correll and Davie County’s offense brought their best last night. Jareke Chambers and North Rowan’s offense brought their best.
The War Eagles were just a little bit better in the frantic end as they overcame a 32-21 fourth-quarter deficit to pull out a 35-32 victory.
“Last year we’d be in tight games and weren’t able to pull those type of games out,” Davie County coach Devore Holman said. “Tonight our guys stepped up, and I hadn’t seen that in two years.”
Correll and Chambers were both unstoppable. Correll rushed for 147 yards and passed for 221. Chambers ran 13 times for 256 yards.
Davie managed to take a 15-13 lead after a back-and-forth first half. But the real fireworks had not begun.
There were three TDs in the first 1 minute, 23 seconds of the third quarer, with Chambers racing 80 yards for North, Davie’s Cooper Wall hauling in a 71-yard pass from Correll and North Rowan’s Sakil Harrison making a 31-yard touchdown. That scoring grab put North ahead 26-21.
With 3:33 left in the third, North faced fourth-and-inches. Chambers took a direct snap, got outside and sped 59 yards to give North the 32-21 lead.
But Davie roared back. Coleman’s 6-yard run finished an 82-yard drive that sliced North’s lead to 32-27 with eight minutes remaining.
Davie clinched the comeback with a with smashmouth scoring drive. The War Eagles went 10 plays — 10 runs by either Correll or Coleman — and 74 yards that ate up nearly four minutes. Correll capped it with an incredible 17-yard run in which he carried several Cavaliers the final 10 yards to paydirt. Coleman converted, and it was run made it 35-32 with 71 seconds on the clock.
North threatened to steal it. With 23 seconds left, Archie tried a fourth-down screen pass to Chambers. The ball glanced off his hands, and linebacker James Boyle intercepted to nail it down for Davie.
