KANNAPOLIS — At 3:46 p.m. Thursday, Kannapolis firefighters responded to a residential fire at 103 Dale Ave. off of West C Street. Units arrived on scene at 3:48 p.m. to find heavy smoke coming from the attic of the one-story brick home.
A family friend riding by the home saw smoke coming from the roof and called 911. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Division Chief Tracy Winecoff said, “Crews encountered a significant amount of smoke and heat in the attic, however the living area of the home was still tenable.” This allowed firefighters to quickly pull the ceiling away to expose the rolling fire in the attic. In addition, the ventilation hole made in the roof by the ladder company allowed the superheated gases to escape while the fire was controlled from the inside. Companies from Concord Fire & Life Safety responded to the scene to assist with fire attack and salvage operations which protect the valuables inside the structure. Cabarrus County EMS assisted on scene with medical monitoring of fire personnel. Kannapolis Police Department assisted, as well.
Concord Fire & Life Safety, Enochville Volunteer Fire Department and Landis Fire Department provided district coverage during the time of the incident.
The home suffered significant fire damage to the attic and moderate smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the structure.
The cause is still under investigation by the KFD Risk Reduction division.
