HENDRSONVILLE (AP) — Veterinarians in western North Carolina say they’ve seen an increase in the number of pets bitten by snakes.
The Times-News of Hendersonville reports most of the incidents have involved dogs and copperhead snakes.
Scientists say the increase may be because of increased movement of the snakes sparked by unusual weather, seasonal migration and breeding activity.
Dr. Fred Rosen with the Western Carolina Regional Animal Hospital in Flat Rock says he’s already treated 20 animals for snakebites since May. He says that’s the most in five years and will likely continue through October.
Dr. Glenn McPherson of Animals of Eden Veterinary Hospital said he’s handled 12 snakebite calls between June and August. Nine were dogs and three were cats. Most of the bites appeared to be from copperheads.
