WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — Actor-director James Franco is shooting “The Garden of Last Days” in Winston-Salem starting next month.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that an open casting call is planned Sunday.

The film is based on the bestselling book by Andre Dubus III, who also wrote “House of Sand and Fog.” The film is described as a contemporary thriller set in the seamy underside of American life.

Filming is scheduled from July 10 to Aug. 6. It was not clear how much of the film is being shot in the Winston-Salem area.

Franco may co-star in the film. He currently is appearing in “This is the End,” an apocalyptic comedy.
