November unemployment rates increased

RALEIGH — Unemployment rates increased in 99 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in November.

Rowan County’s rate rose to 4.7 percent, up from 4.4 percent in October but down from the November 2016 rate of 5.3 percent.

In Cabarrus County, the rate also increased, from 3.8 percent in October to 4.2 percent in November. The November 2016 rate was 4.4 percent.

Tyrrell County had the highest unemployment rate in the state at 8.1 percent, while Buncombe County had the lowest at 3.4 percent.

All 15 of the state’s metro areas had rate increases.

Among the metro areas, Rocky Mount at 6.5 percent had the highest rate and Asheville had the lowest rate at 3.6 percent.

Statewide, the November jobless rate was 4.5 percent.

All rates are not seasonally adjusted.

Rates in counties surrounding Rowan were:

• Davidson: 4.3 percent, up from 3.9 in October; the November 2016 rate was 4.7 percent.

• Davie: 4.1 percent, up from 3.7 in October; the November 2016 rate was 4.4 percent.

• Iredell: 4.2 percent, up from 3.9 in October; November 2016 was 4.6 percent.

• Stanly: 4.3 percent, up from 3.9 in October; November 2016 was 4.6 percent.

Rowan’s unemployment rate is the highest in the six-county region.

The N.C. Department of Commerce reports Rowan’s labor force at 66,667 people.

Cabarrus has the largest workforce in the area, with 103,727 people. Davie has the smallest workforce, with 20,198 people.
