Area Sports Briefs: South girls are 3-0

South Rowan’s girls basketball team won against Concord, 59-29, in SPC action on Tuesday.
Janiya Downs scored 14 points for the Raiders (3-0, 2-0 SPC).
Tazah “Z” Hardin scored 12. Whitley Arnott and Riley Corriher had 10 each. Brooke Lowery scored seven, and Jalee Rollins scored six.
Alexa Smith scored eight for the Spiders.

Concord’s boys beat South Rowan, 80-46.
South hung in the game for a half and trailed 34-23 at the break.
“It was a tale of two halves,” said South coach Andre McCain.
Leading South (0-3, 0-2 SPC) were Dillon Kluttz (12 points), Bailey Graham (11) and Connor Childers (6).
For the Spiders, Jordan Stowe and Hamsah Nasirildeen scored 15 each, and Andrew Metcalf scored 14.

Heath Slabach scored 21 points to lead Davie’s boys to a 63-56 win against North Iredell.

Rachel LaLonde came off the bench and scored 19 points to lead North Iredell’s girls to a 62-47 win against Davie.
Trinity Hayes scored 15 for the War Eagles (0-2). Ashlyn Hampton scored 12.

Tre Oates has scored 38 points and pulled down 27 rebounds in Salisbury’s first two games.
The Hornets won against Piedmont Classical (86-76)and Uwharrie Charter (86-53).
Shaleek Williams has scored 30 points in two games, while Trell Baker has 24.

Lavar Batts Jr. scored 18 points to lead Robinson to a 79-69 SPC win against Central Cabarrus.
Isaiah Salter scored 26 for the Vikings.

North Rowan’s boys lost at Butler, 62-50.
North scored 22 in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs had built a big lead.
Henderson Lentz scored 21 points to lead the Cavaliers.
Joseph Scott and Brevin Goodlett scored eight points each. Malon Herron-Cuthbertson scored seven.
Gerrale Gates led the Bulldogs with 16 points.

Butler won the girls game against North Rowan, 56-19. Butler led 24-0 after a quarter and was up 35-6 at halftime.

Men’s basketball
D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) had 18 points and six rebounds in Newberry’s 108-90 win against Warren Wilson.

The Pfeiffer men’s basketball team forced 37 turnovers and blew out Mount Olive, 125-81, on Tuesday in Conference Carolinas action.
Josh Calhoun and Andrew Guerrero scored 16 points each. A.J. Clark had 15.

David Tripp (A.L. Brown) scored 19 points as Davidson County Community College beat Sandhills, 106-93, on Tuesday.

Women’s basketball
Shay Steele (West Rowan) scored 18 points for Morehead State in a win against Kentucky Christian.

8th-grade basketball
Erwin’s girls won against China Grove, 62-8.
Carleigh Perry scored 17 points for the Eagles (7-0). Colbie Perry had 11. Lani Isley scored nine. Dezi Lakey had eight points. Jenna Robinson scored seven.
Erwin is at Knox on Thursday.

8th-grade girls basketball
Knox raced out to a 22-3 halftime lead and defeated West Rowan, 32-19.
Jahavanik Horton had 13 points and five rebounds, Jakiya Brown had points and seven steals , Lillie Rusher had four points , six assists and five steals. Ellen Yang had four points and five rebounds.
Amiya Moreland led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and 12 rebounds .

8th-grade boys basketball
North Rowan beat Southeast, 53-26.
Nick Colson led the Mavericks with 12 points. Javon Smith scored 10, Zay Davis eight, and Jaharion Graham six.
Kendrell Goodes, Amir Watkins and Kayvion Carpenter added four each.
North hosts Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.

Jayvee girls basketball
Carson’s girls won against East Rowan, 53-26.
Taylor Conrad scored 19 for the Cougars. Victoria Post scored 13.
Defensive standouts for Carson were Katie Jewell, Malia Hughley and Nancy Gamewell.
Kamden Johnson scored 17 for the Mustangs.

Local golf
Forty-nine GARS members played in foursomes at Lexington Golf Club.
Low’A’ Flight player was Phil Cauble with a net of 66.18.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Bobby Bryant with a net of 66.07.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Jim Brown with a net of 66.66.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Johnny Graham with a net of 68.06.
Clive Mahaffey, 81, shot an 80, Ralph Brown, 85, shot an 83,
and J.C. Ritchie, 92, shot an 89.

NCHSAA
Mya Johnson from Roxboro Community School and Jo Leake from West Montgomery High are the state athletes of the week.
Johnson, a senior on the Bulldogs basketball team, recorded a pair of big performances during the school’s inaugural Thanksgiving tournament. She poured in 16 points and hit 7 of 11 free throws to help Roxboro Community past Word of God 50-44 in the first round. Then she followed that up with a 28-point night, including five 3-pointers in the Bulldogs’ 64-54 loss to the South Australian All-Star travel team.
Leake, a senior at West Montgomery, rushed for 380 yards on just 17 carries while tying a state record for rushing touchdowns in a game by scoring eight times on the ground in West’s 70-42 win over Swain County. Leake scored from 32, 69, 2, 63, 47, 35, 46 and 1 yard out on the night.
