Business Roundup: Integro patents tire-inspecting machine

Published 12:00 am Sunday, August 30, 2015

Salisbury-based Integro Technologies received an official patent this week from the U.S. Patent and TradeMark Office for its Tire Guardian Series machines.

Integro is a vision system integration company. Many of its machines and projects focus on inspecting products for quality.

The Tire Guardian machine reads, verifies and documents all necessary Department of Transportation information on the sidewall of the tire. The machine also verifies the size, speed rating, manufacturer directional arrow and inspects for deformities. It’s a combination of two different machine vision applications that can be used individually or in sequence to assure tire assembly quality.

Within 15 seconds, a laser light is projected across the sidewall surface of a rotating automobile tire. A profile sensor digitizes the band containing molded-in features. The outputs are formatted into a video signal, which are transformed onto a computer screen. The digitized tire data is then analyzed by the Tire Guardian, processed, accepted/rejected and stored for each tire assembly.

In an emailed statement, Integro Senior Sales Engineer E. Starke Farley III said the company wouldn’t normally file for a patent of machines like Tire Guardian. However, Farley said the company saw an opportunity to fill a void in a worldwide market that was in need of a tire sidewall inspection system.

“The advances in 3D imaging technology over the last 5 years have been huge, and this allows us to lock in our fully integrated turnkey system for this market,” Farley said.
