Area Sports Briefs: Kannapolis Legion tops Southern Rowan

Kannapolis beat Southern Rowan 4-1 in American Legion baseball at Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday.
Trace Hagler pitched seven innings and struck out six for Kannapolis. Daniel O’Kelly pitched two innings for the save.
Hagler and O’Kelly combined on a two-hitter.
Southern Rowan (3-1) lost for the first time.
Kyle Lowke, Jackson Raper and Chandler Hubbard had two hits each for Kannapolis (2-6). Caleb Threadgill had two RBIs.
Bo Corriher pitched seven innings and struck out three for Southern Rowan.
• Burke Fulcher pitched eight strong innings in his American Legion debut and struck out five to lead Southern Rowan to a 6-2 win against Kannapolis on Monday.
Matt Honeycutt had two hits for Southern Rowan.
Southern Rowan scored three runs in the seventh to pull away from Kannapolis.
Caleb Threadgill had three hits for Kannapolis. Christian Griffin had two hits. Alex Rodriguez pitched six innings.
• A tripleheader hosted by Kannapolis American Legion is scheduled at Northwest Cabarrus on Saturday, May 30.
Southern Rowan plays High Point at 1, Cherryville takes on Rowan County at 4, and Kernersville plays Kannapolis at 7.
• League games start on June 1.

College baseball
Eric Tyler (South Rowan) had two RBIs in East Carolina’s 9-1 win against Houston on Sunday that gave the Pirates the American Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
The Pirates (40-20) are headed to the regional hosted by Miami.

Junior Legion
Carson Junior Legion won 7-6 against Concord on Monday.
Zack Lee pitched five innings for the win, while Devon Gay pitched two innings for a save.
Brycen Holshouser had two doubles and a triple and drove in three runs.
Lee and Logan Ridenhour had two hits each.
Carson is home against the Kannapolis O’s on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Basketball camps
West Rowan basketball camps are set for June 15-17 and July 13-15.
The cost of a camp is $50 and includes first-class instruction and a camp T-shirt.

East baseball camp
East Rowan Baseball camp dates are June 15-20.
Times: 9-2 on Monday-Thursday and 9-12 on Friday
The cost is $125. Lunch will be provided on Friday. Campers bring lunch the other days. Each camper receives a free T-shirt
Competition on Friday with medals to the winner.
Campers get a video of their hitting and fielding.

Sam update
MONTREAL — Michael Sam says his priority is helping the Montreal Alouettes win, and he’s not trying to “do anything historic” as the first openly gay player in the Canadian Football League. Sam signed a two-year contract with the Alouettes.
