Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone leads after first round

Livingstone’s men’s golf team leads the team competition after the first round of the CIAA Championships at Larkhaven.

The Blue Bears shot 32-over 320. Chowan is second at 326.  Livingstone’s Harry Standberry shot 77 for second place, while Stephen Washington shot 78 and is tied for third.

• Catawba’s Matt Hardman was named to the  All-South Atlantic Conference first team for men’s golf.

Hardman has posted a 73.8 stroke average to lead Catawba.

  

Prep golf

The 18-hole SPC  Championships will be held  Monday, April 20,  at 1 p.m. at Corbin Hills.  The race for the individual  champion is heating up with South Rowan’s Davis Richards holding a two-shot lead over East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Spring Two-Man Tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday April 25-26. The format is team Captain’s Choiceand will be flighted after Saturday’s round.  The entry fee is $80 (non-member) or  $50 (member).

Entry includes golf, food and beverages  and prizes.

Entry does not include team skins for each day and the team buy-in on Sunday.

Start time is set for 1 p.m. both days.  Call the Corbin Hills golf staff at 704-636-0672.

•The 37th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur Championship is scheduled for July 17-19.

The entry fee is $25,  plus applicable cart and green fee for the event.

Tournament players must be a resident of Rowan County or a member of a golf club in Rowan.

The low 31 qualifiers and defending champion Eric Mulkey will advance to championship match play.

Tournament qualifying begins Friday, July 10, and concludes Sunday, July 12.

The past-champions cookout and optional nine- hole shootout for qualifiers is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, at 5  p.m.

Championship Match Play will begin Friday, July 17, with winners advancing to play on  Saturday, July 18.  Semifinal and final matches conclude on Sunday, July 19. Contact  Corbin Hills at 704-636-0672.

Knox

Knox Middle School is hosting its 3rd Annual Rock Your Socks 5k and Half Mile Fun Run on Sunday, April 19, at the school.

The 5k starts at 2 p.m., with the Fun Run at 2:45.  Cost is $15 pre-registration and $20 race day.  The Fun run is $5.  Register at www.sportoften.com or the school office.  Call 704-647-2035.
