KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis man called authorities Tuesday night and said he was shot while attempting to rob a gas station. According to Kannapolis Police, John Arthur Davidson III was shot by a store clerk about 8:20 p.m. after he demanded money from two people inside Bethpage Grocery at 4940 Mooresville Road.
Police said Davidson was carrying a handgun and wanted the personal property of two people in the businesses, as well as the money in the register.
A press release from Kannapolis Police said the clerk “retrieved her own firearm and discharged it several times at the suspect.”
While officers were responding to the call, Davidson called the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office told the tele-communicator that “he just tried to rob the store and got shot.”
Davidson said he was hiding behind the store in the bushes, police said.
He was shot in the lower right leg and in the upper torso.
Kannapolis Police were on the scene for several hours Wednesday night. The store was roped off with crime tape, but broken glass was strewn outside of the business where the front door had apparently been shot out.
The man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center at Northeast. Police said he will be charged with two counts of felony robbery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor assault. Officers said they do not expect the clerk to be charged in the incident, but the district attorney will review the case.
