Community foundation awards grants

The Salisbury Community Foundation recently distributed grants totaling $75,100 to local nonprofit agencies.
Grants were awarded to the following organizations:
• $3,500 to Abundant Living Adult Day Services Inc. Haven House for the Art for the Soul collaborative community arts project.
• $5,000 to American Red Cross, Elizabeth H. Dole Chapter, for emergency service for disaster victims.
• $5,000 to Catawba College to install handicapped-accessible automatic doors for patrons.
• $10,000 to Communities in Schools of Rowan County for an after-school tutoring program for eighth- and ninth-grade students.
• $5,000 to the Community Care Clinic of Rowan County Inc. for additional staffing who provide dental care for the uninsured.
• $5,000 to Hood Theological Seminary for new library furnishings.
• $4,500 to Livingstone College for their annual community outreach project, the Children’s Book Festival.
• $5,000 to Main Street United Methodist Church for the Main Street Assistance Center building upgrade.
• $2,500 to Rowan County Parks & Recreation for rehabilitation of the existing putt-putt course at Dan Nicholas Park to provide 18 of 36 holes which are universally accessible.
• $10,000 to Rowan Helping Ministries for crisis assistance financial vouchers.
• $6,500 to Rowan Partners for Education for the Educators Express resource center.
• $2,600 to Rowan-Salisbury School System for the E.D. Koontz Elementary Field Trip Project, providing multiple field trips for grades 2-5 in core areas of science and math.
• $1,500 to Rowan-Salisbury School System for the Hanford Dole After-School Program designed to meet academic needs.
• $9,000 to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for the Food for Thought Program, which provides single-serving, easy-to-prepare meals to children on weekends.
The Salisbury Community Foundation was established in 1944 to increase the charitable giving resources in the Salisbury/Rowan County area. From its first contribution to create a community endowment, the Salisbury Community Foundation has grown into a philanthropic organization managing more than 80 funds with total charitable assets of $9.9 million by end of October 2011.
The Salisbury Community Foundation joined Charlotte-based Foundation For The Carolinas as a supporting organization in 1995 and became an affiliate in 2006.
The Foundation assists donors in making charitable contributions to the community, provides services for nonprofit organizations to create new or manage existing endowments and awards grants to local nonprofits. For more information, visit www.Salisbury-cf.org.
