Put these felons on foot
Drivers who are foolish enough to try to outrun the police donít worry about endangering other people. But maybe they will worry about losing their vehicles.
That would be the result of a proposed ěRun and Youíre Doneî law. State House Bill 427 would allow a fleeing driverís vehicle to be confiscated and sold by the state. Rep. Harry Warren (R-Rowan) is one of the chief sponsors. Rep. John Faircloth (R-Guilford), a former Salisbury chief of police, is also sponsoring the bill, which has been endorsed by the N.C. High Patrol, the N.C. Sheriffs Association and other law-enforcement groups.
State law already provides for forfeiture of vehicles in a few instances, including habitual DWI offenders. Lawmakers should also raise the stakes for drivers who flee from police, putting innocent people at risk.
Drivers who recklessly endanger the public already face the suspension and possible loss of their licenses. They should lose their vehicles, too.
