A grieving parentís words
Thereís no pain more profound than that of a grieving parent who has just lost a child, no anguish more raw.
That pain is now etched into the lives of Samantha and Joey Doolittle, whose 11-week-old son perished in a fire in East Spencer last Friday.
You also can hear it in the words Samantha Doolittle uttered afterward, in speaking with a reporter about the lack of smoke detectors in the familyís rental home.
ěMy house did not have a single one,î she said. ěMake sure, no matter what, make sure you get smoke detectors.î
Carbon-monoxide detectors, too. This week in Greensboro, three small children narrowly escaped lethal poisoning when a chirping alarm alerted neighbors to a dangerous buildup of the gas inside a home.
It was a close call for the children. But without the detector, more parents would be in mourning today.
