In recognition of Historic Salisbury Foundation’s 40th anniversary year, here is a reprint of a Salisbury Post story from Nov. 24, 1992.Historic Salisbury Foundation has won the Alfred Ray Newsome Award for historical preservation and education.
The award cited the foundation’s Phase II renovation of Salisbury’s depot, the OctoberTour of historic homes, the three-week Victorian Christmas at the Hall House and the group’s 20th anniversary celebration.
The award is presented each year to the North Carolina historical organization that has conducted the most comprehensive and outstanding historical activities of the previous year.
From the summer of 1991 to the summer of 1992, the foundation was led by then-President Edward Norvell, a volunteer board of trustees and an office staff.
“It is timely that Historic Salisbury Foundation has received this award during its 20th anniversary year,” said President Donald Sayers. “We are extremely proud of this award in that it demonstrates a recognition of the quality of our programs by our peer preservation organizations.”
Other activities cited in the award were the Western Rowan County tour, group tours of the Hall House and West Square Historic District for Rowan County students and visitors; the operation of the Hall House as a museum on Saturdays and Sundays; the installation of the Hall House garden by the Master Gardeners; and the foundation’s Preservation Awards.
