Fine Frame Gallery, 105 S. Main St., hosts a Tribute to Magic, featuring the unveiling of sculpture by Robert Toth this evening, Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5:30-7 p.m.
The event includes an appearance by Buddy Farnan and “Magic by Glen.”
Also on display will be new paintings by local artists Alee Johnson, Kenneth Koskella and Phyllis Steimel.
Pinocchio story time
SPENCER — The Spencer Doll and Toy Museum will host its first story time on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
Children may enjoy the adventures of Pinocchio, a snack and a chance to see the Museum’s Pinocchio exhibit. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate.
Storytime, crafts and snack are free with admission: adults $5, students/seniors $4, age 4-15 $3, children under 3 free.

Songwriters Festival
GATLINBURG — Aug. 23-25, rain or shine, Gatlinburg, Tenn. celebrates its Appalachian musical roots at the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival. The craft of songwriting from the songwriters themselves provide ongoing performances for three days.
The festival is a platform for songwriters to perform their own original songs, many of which can be recognized from the “hit” lists. The songwriter not only performs but tells the story behind the song.
Visitors are invited to bring instruments and songs; there will be jam spots available.

Auditions tonight
Auditions are this evening, Aug. 23, at Center for Faith & the Arts, for “Dix, a Story of the Back-Ward Women,” an original play by Salisbury playwright and poet Janice Fuller, that explores the lives of nurses and patients at the Dorothea Dix Hospital.
Auditions begin at 7 p.m. at 207 W. Harrison St. Rehearsals will be in Salisbury; performances are in October at LGAC and at Warehouse Performing Arts center, Cornelius. Contact leestreettheatre@gmail.com
Carolina Sky at LGAC
On Friday, Aug. 24, the Americana band Carolina Sky will be performing in the Looking Glass Artists Center black box theatre, with special guest Chelsea Rhae Childers.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts 8 p.m. This s how is appropriate for all ages. Ladies and children will be admitted free; cover for everyone else is $3. Concessions are available.

The Concert Choir
The Concert Choir will begin its 36th season on Aug. 27. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem Mass will be the featured work for this fall season and all past and current singers are invited to participate.
New singers will require a quick, informal audition in private at the end of rehearsal by the director to determine vocal range and section.

Goodson memorial car and truck show
CONCORD — The Barron D. Goodson Memorial Classic Car and Truck Show is open to all classic and late model muscle cars and trucks on Saturday, Aug. 25. Registration is brom 8-11 a.m.; trophies will be awarded at 1:30 p.m.
Barron’s 1934 Ford, 1955 Pontiac, 1957 Chevrolet truck, 1963 Studebaker Hawk, 1963 Thunderbird and 1987 Chevy truck will be at the show.
Special guests include Dan Truhitte, classic car enthusiast and actor in “The Sound of Music,” Ray Smith and his 1937 Cord, and Betty Sedberry.
All monies raised will benefit the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership. The Goodson family’s story is on the NCLCP website.
There will be food (by Darrell’s BBQ), prizes, raffles, door prizes, giveaways, a silent auction, bounce house, petting zoo, fire truck, balloon lady, face painting, and more.

Ballyhoo auditions
CONCORD — Old Courthouse Theatre announces auditions for “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” by Alfred Uhry (“Driving Miss Daisy”), on Sept. 24-25, from 7-9 p.m.
Auditions consist of a cold read from the script. A cast of seven actors and actresses will be needed. Performance dates begin Nov. 29.

Call for singers
Join the Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society (SRCS) in their 102nd choral season with rehearsals beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 S. Church St. The non-auditioned choir is open to all singers, 16 years old and above, and is currently under the direction of Matthew Newton, Catawba College alum.

Pottery classes
Registration is open for the fall session of adult pottery classes at Pottery 101, that runs from Sep. 4-Oct. 24. Classes are on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 6:30-9 or Wednesday mornings from 10-12:30. Cost of the class is $200 which includes a #25 bag of clay and 5 additional hours of studio time.
