Darrell Harwood will be performing this evening, Aug. 9, as the fifth band in the 2012 Brick Street Live concert series line-up, which will take place on East Fisher Street. Gates open at 6 p.m.
Harwood, originally from China Grove, stays true to his roots by giving back to the community through his music. Since his first benefit show in 2009, Darrell has brought his energetic country sound to several shows every year for charitable benefits.

Salisbury Ghost Walk
Michael Lane, founder of the supernatural research Society, and his crew, will lead a mini class and investigation from 8-p.m. to midnight tomorrow night.
This evening of fun and paranormal investigations is $25 per person, and includes ice cream sundaes.

Woodleaf Tomato Trot
WOODLEAF — The popular Tomato Trot is the Friday evening kick-off for Saturday’s annual Tomato Festival in Woodleaf.
Martin Marietta Materials is the sponsor for the 2012 5K Tomato Trot Evening Run And Walk on Aug. 17. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. and the race starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Woodleaf Tomato Festival itself begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, on the grounds of Unity Presbyterian Church, 885 Woodleaf Barber Road.
Activities include a silent auction, attic sale, parade with antique tractors, tomato eating contest, craft booths, fresh produce, live music, tomato tasting, the Miss Tomato Festival Pageant as well as competition for Little Mater Sprout, Little Miss Mater and Little Tommy-Toe.

Tots to teens talent
“Let’s Lend a Helping Hand,” a community mentoring group for children, is sponsoring a talent event to showcase the singing, musical, poetic, dancing, mime and comedy talents of children from tot age to teenagers.
Each category will have cash prizes for first, second and third place. Any leftover money will go toward school supplies for local children.
The show date is Thursday, Aug. 16, from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Civic Center, and will be emceed by T. Ray Sanders, a comedian from High Point.

The mission of LLAHH is to reduce gang and street violence. LLAHH will be assisted by OCAA (Our Community Appreciation Awards).
BTS giveaway event
EAST SPENCER — The third annual back-to-school clothing and food giveaway, sponsored by Workers of the Vineyard, will be held Aug. 18.
From now until the event, held at Royal Giants Park in East Spencer, the Workers wil be collecting items for the giveaway. The Town of East Spencer Municipal Building is the drop-off site for donations.
The event will include a skills basketball camp and a 3 on 3 tournament, as well as a bounce house and other activities for the kids, free school supplies (while they last), hot dogs, hair cuts, ice cream and more.
The newly renovated park is located off Long Street one block north of Andrews Street. Sponsors include Trinity Wesleyan, Fairview Heights Baptist, Southern City AME Zion, Mt. Zion Baptist, Mt. Gilead Church of Christ, and Fishermen of Men from Fairview Heights Baptist.
Free CFS concerts
CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte Folk Society’s 30th anniversary season opens spectacularly on Friday, Aug. 10, with a concert by Wayne Henderson & Friends. The music gets underway at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Ave. in uptown Charlotte. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Call for artists
Waterworks Visual Arts Center is seeking submissions from artists who express their personal relationships to their faiths through art, including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity. Deadline for submission is Aug. 30. Submissions should include a current resume, artist’s statement, 5-10 digital images of current work available for exhibit. All mediums are acceptable

In other Waterworks news, this winter concludes Waterworks Visual Arts Center’s series, Art of Faiths – Religions of the World: Diversity and Tolerance. Through photographs, paintings and mixed media works, artists express their personal relationships to their faiths. The exhibition investigates the breadth and complexity of ideas visually portrayed by the selected artists as they communicate acceptance and social inclusiveness.
Exhibition dates are Nov. 26, 2012—Feb. 9, 2013. The public opening reception is Friday, Nov. 30, from 6-8 p.m.
Proposed programming will include a public forum led by a panel of artists, theologians, and laity who will discuss how art has always interacted and supported religion presently and throughout history.
Choral auditions
CONCORD — The Choral Academy is scheduling auditions/vocal placement interviews for children and youth (ages 7-20) to participate in three age-based choirs. The Galleries’ fifth
CONCORD — The Galleries will celebrate their fifth anniversary by bringing back 50 artists whose work they have displayed, including Robert Crum and Syed Ahmad and Whitney Peckman.
High Five will be on view Aug. 13-Oct. 4. The exhibition includes paintings, photographs, drawings, quilts, pastels, glass, wood, baskets, sculptures, gourds, pottery and fiber art. There is no admission charge.

A romantic afternoon
