Darrell Harwood will be performing this evening, Aug. 9, as the fifth band in the 2012 Brick Street Live concert series line-up, which will take place on East Fisher Street. Gates open at 6 p.m.
Harwood, originally from China Grove, stays true to his roots by giving back to the community through his music. Since his first benefit show in 2009, Darrell has brought his energetic country sound to several shows every year for charitable benefits.

Michael Lane, founder of the supernatural research Society, and his crew, will lead a mini class and investigation from 8-p.m. to midnight tomorrow night.

Woodleaf Tomato Trot
WOODLEAF — The popular Tomato Trot is the Friday evening kick-off for Saturday’s annual Tomato Festival in Woodleaf.
Martin Marietta Materials is the sponsor for the 2012 5K Tomato Trot Evening Run And Walk on Aug. 17. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. and the race starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tots to teens talent
“Let’s Lend a Helping Hand,” a community mentoring group for children, is sponsoring a talent event to showcase the singing, musical, poetic, dancing, mime and comedy talents of children from tot age to teenagers.
Each category will have cash prizes for first, second and third place. Any leftover money will go toward school supplies for local children.
The show date is Thursday, Aug. 16, from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Civic Center, and will be emceed by T. Ray Sanders, a comedian from High Point.

BTS giveaway event
EAST SPENCER — The third annual back-to-school clothing and food giveaway, sponsored by Workers of the Vineyard, will be held Aug. 18.
From now until the event, held at Royal Giants Park in East Spencer, the Workers wil be collecting items for the giveaway. The Town of East Spencer Municipal Building is the drop-off site for donations.
The event will include a skills basketball camp and a 3 on 3 tournament, as well as a bounce house and other activities for the kids, free school supplies (while they last), hot dogs, hair cuts, ice cream and more.

In other Waterworks news, this winter concludes Waterworks Visual Arts Center’s series, Art of Faiths – Religions of the World: Diversity and Tolerance. The exhibition investigates the breadth and complexity of ideas visually portrayed by the selected artists as they communicate acceptance and social inclusiveness.
Exhibition dates are Nov. 26, 2012—Feb. 9, 2013. The public opening reception is Friday, Nov. 30, from 6-8 p.m.
Proposed programming will include a public forum led by a panel of artists, theologians, and laity who will discuss how art has always interacted and supported religion presently and throughout history.
