The Warrior Golf Club was the scene for the Viamedia H.E.L.P Challenge 5K and Fun Run on Sunday afternoon. H.E.L.P. stands for Hope Empowers Local People and the Warrior Golf Club had decided to give this year’s proceeds to the Marco Kauffman family. Kauffman was shot in a home invasion last November and died in December.

Two-time United States Olympian Anthony Famiglietti of Davidson was the overall winner in a fantastic time of 14 minutes and 59 seconds on a challenging course. Alejandro Arreola was second in 17:48 with Kurtis Reed finishing third in 19:33.

Leading the women was Miriam Lowery with a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds, followed by Donna Stallings in 24:22 and Sarah Grizzard in 24:31.

Top masters were Richard Ellis at 21:12 and Laurie Ward in 25:57. The grandmasters titles went to Frank Yanko and Susan Livengood with clockings of 21:28 and 26:58. Top senior grandmasters were Joe Conway in 24:28 and Anna Weaver in 46:18.

Concordia Lutheran Church easily won the team challenge by having the most participants, followed by the Friends of Marco. The Concordia contingent numbered over 30 runners and walkers. Reckless Running of Davidson won the award for the fastest team.

Major sponsors for the event also included the Town of Landis, C.F. Parks & Company, Inc., S&D Coffee and Tea, Cloninger Ford of Salisbury, McCoy and Hillard CPA’s, and Ralph Ketner. Race director Rick Houston said, “Our sponsors were great and the course and runners were kept safe by the Landis police and Atwell fire department. We were happy to raise funds for the Kauffman family and it was good to see so many of them here today.”
