N.C. Highway Patrol officials confirmed a Cleveland man seriously injured in a late Friday night crash at the intersection of Hurley School and Sherrills Ford roads has died.
Jake Lane, 21, of the 200 block of Barber Junction Road, was unresponsive at the scene, and his passenger, Alyssa Sides, also 21, of the 600 block of Cool Springs Road, Iredell County, had a number of broken bones and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Trooper A.J. Carpenter said Lane died sometime Saturday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Sides remains at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast.
The collision occurred just before 10:50 p.m. Carpenter said Lane was exceeding the posted 45 mph speed limit and estimated he was driving 60 mph. He was traveling on Hurley School Road in a 1993 Ford Ranger, continued through the intersection and struck a tree head-on.
Alcohol or other impairment was not a factor in the crash, Carpenter said.
The two were wearing seat belts. Sides had broken ribs, a broken sternum, fractured skull and a concussion.
