Letter: Health care system only ‘OK’ compared to others

Kate Carter who wrote “Public should worry less about coronavirus” on Wednesday mistakenly stated the US health care system is the best and not lacking as in some of the infected countries.

The U.S. health care system is OK to serve the needs of the wealthy and those who are fortunate to have health insurance, but that leaves out millions of people. Many people do not even earn the minimum wage or have health insurance or paid sick leave.

The U.S. is the only industrialized country that does not have universal health care and also paid sick leave.  Attempts to have N.C. adopt expanded Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act are continually thwarted.

Yes, we have good reasons to fear what is happening in our country, especially for those  people who have no health care and who barely live from paycheck to paycheck.
