Dr. Judy Grissom, superintendent of the Rowan-Salisbury Schools, is asking the county to delay a decision on funding a central administrative office.
Grissom issued a statement Friday afternoon citing the current uncertainty about state funding.
Grissom noted that school officials had discussed the education center and a possible vote on it at the Rowan County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday night.
According to the press release, Grissom made a request to withdraw the request for a vote until a later date.
The central office is not on the agenda for the board meeting Monday night.
She cited the March 6 move by Gov. Beverly Perdue to take N.C. Education Lottery and Public School Capital Building Funds. Both are sources of funding used to pay the present bond debt and fund further projects.
“While it is still not totally decided what the final overall impact will be to the county or the school system funding, what is known is not good,” the press release continued.
Grissom has requested school and county officials meet again in 30 days to decide if the financial situation has improved and if it would be possible to move forward with plans for the consolidated education center.
“If there are no improvements, we will continue to monitor the situation and request that action be taken at the most opportune time,” Grissom wrote.
Last month a majority of the board of commissioners agreed to pay half the cost of a central office building up to $7.5 million. The straw vote came during the board’s annual retreat. Commissioners haven’t taken a final vote on the issue.
