UPDATE: Winter Weather Advisory Thursday; Rowan weather: Clouds might bring snow tomorrow

UPDATE: Rowan County is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 a.m. Thursday to midnight.

Moisture returning from the south into a cold airmass on Thursday will produce accumulating snowfall across much of the area.

The precipitation could begin as a mixture of rain, snow, and sleet, but should steadily transition to snow throughout the day.

Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches,with spotty 3 inch accumulations near the I-40 corridor, and amounts around 1/2 inch southeast of I-85.

Roads will initially be warm and wet, but with slippery conditions developing as temperatures fall through the day. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

Widespread black ice is expected Thursday night into Friday morning as temperatures fall into the 20s.

Today will be cloudy and 50, with a 20 percent chance of rain before noon. Winds will be north northeast at 6-8 mph. Tonight will be cloudy and 38, with calm wind.

The chance of precipitation Thursday will be 70 percent, with rain and snow likely, becoming all snow after 3 p.m. It will be cloudy and 40, with northeast wind at 5-9 mph. New snow accumulation will be less than half an inch.

Thursday night will have a 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before midnight. It will be cloudy, then begin to clear, with a cold low of 25. Winds will be north around 8 mph. Again, less than half an inch of snow is expected.

Friday will be sunny and cold, with a high of 40 and north northeast wind at 7-11 mph. The low will be 24.

Saturday will be sunny and 52, with a mostly clear night and a low of 30.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and 54. A 70 percent chance of showers is likely after midnight. It will be mostly cloudy and 39.

Monday will have an 80 percent chance of showers, with a high of 54. The chance of rain Monday night will be 60 percent, with a low of 43.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny and 61, with a 30 percent chance of showers.
