Letter: Don’t merge Knox Middle, Overton Elementary

Close Knox and Overton and spread the students to North and surrounding schools. Why build new school with enrollment so low at other schools? The school board didn’t have any problem closing Woodleaf and shipping students to Cleveland.

… Police Department works to ensure makeup of officers …

Should the 911 operator ask for victim race, color and sex in order to assign the “right” officer to respond? Sounds Orwellian. All I ask for is a professional officer regardless of race, creed or color. Social engineering does not work.

Meanwhile, Woodleaf Elementary School is a pile of rubble and, while the community grieves for the loss of the school, we were hoping to at least keep the gym as part of a community park.

We believe it is a historic structure and would be an asset to our area. Sadly, not one person has had a return phone call from the board of education or Rowan-Salisbury School.

My response is unfortunately necessarily restrained due to the on-going investigation – but I can say the town’s finances were an absolute mess when I took over as interim finance officer in February 2019. The changes we implemented from February forward were transformative, as the Local Government Commission staff will attest.

— Roger Hosey

School board looks at new $12.3 million contract …

The same iPads can be purchased from a local Best Buy for $250 each without a quantity discount.

The total cost of 20,800 iPads would be $5.2 million. I know the system will say “maintenance and software,” but the software updates occur on their own and to purchase a few hundred extra would save the system millions — literally $7.1 million.

— John Davis
