Local family hosts Guatemalan exchange student

McKenna Anderson, an eighth grader at North Hills Christian School, and her family recently hosted Guatemalan exchange student Camila Figueroa.

The Anderson’s have opened their home to exchange students at NHCS in the past and hope to continue doing so in the future. McKenna would like to one day become an exchange student herself in order to broaden her perspective and impact the world for Christ. 

Camila and McKenna are two teenage girls, born 20 days apart in two different parts of the world. McKenna is outgoing and energetic while Camila is a little more quiet and reserved. Despite their differences, their story is one of friendship, understanding, and mutual respect.

The Salisbury branch of AAUW offers scholarships

The American Association of University Women is pleased to announce that it
will again offer scholarships to two female students from this area to
attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. The annual conference brings together college women to address contemporary leadership issues. It provides a transformative experience for attendees, and students return home ready to improve their
campuses and their communities.

At the conference student leaders will meet AAUW honorees at the women of Distinction Awards Ceremony, be inspired by nationally recognized keynote speakers, develop skills by attending workshops, take part in pre-conference activities and community service projects, and enjoy endless opportunities to network with other women leaders from around the country.

The Conference will take place May 27 – 30 at the University of Maryland. The applicant may apply for the local AAUW Salisbury Affiliate scholarships to cover registration, room and board, but is required to apply first for a National scholarship to cover these conference expenses in which case local scholarship monies may be used for travel. Female applicants must be from Rowan County or attending school in Rowan County, and college sophomore or junior with at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average. If awarded, they may be required to attend a scholarship meeting and make a presentation at an AAUW meeting. Livingstone College begins 2020 lyceum series

Livingstone College hosts weekly lyceum series in an effort to cultivate and encourage
students to purpose-driven life experiences through podium guests and inspirational programs.

The College began the 2020 series on January 15 with an initiation of freshman class students in
a jacket ceremony. On January 22, they continued with 2020 Vision as Rev. LaKesha Womack energized the audience with five tips for success.

Invited by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Student Council of Livingstone College, Rev. Womack, has a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and is a graduate of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University

The program began with senior Rochara Michael’s unity prayer, as sophomore Deborah Walker followed with a welcome and junior Samuel Allen read scripture Habakkuk 2: 1-3. The college
collectively sang Lift Ev’ry Voice and sophomore Michael Gilyard read the morning
announcements, senior William McCorn introduced the speaker, and students Savannah Bennet and Elyse White provided inspirational praise entertainment.

Womack shared these tips: Begin how you want to end; You can’t cheat the grind; Heal your hurt; Cash is king, credit is queen and debt is the joker; and You have the power to be who God wants you to be.

“I was moved by her last point. I know it’s up to me to live in God’s purpose. I must be cognizant of how I use my gifts to be a blessing,” Junior Eryka Praileau said.
