SALISBURY — A local man was charged with robbery after he was accused of stealing money from a teenager who was counting his tips after working at Sam’s Car Wash. The suspect was apprehended not far from the business, according to the Salisbury Police Department.

Salisbury Police charged Aquavius Robert Lee, 23, whose address is listed as the streets of Salisbury, with felony common law robbery. He also faces felony obtaining property by false pretenses from a Nov. 14, 2019, incident.

The robbery occurred Friday just after 4:30 p.m. at the West Innes Street business location. The 17-year-old juvenile was approached by a man who asked if he could have some money. The teen told him no. The suspect grabbed the boy into a “bear hug” and reached into his pocket, said Police Lt. Greg Beam.

Beam said the teen elbowed the suspect in the face and the suspect took off on the suspect’s bicycle. Police responded, obtained a description of the suspect and caught up to him in the area of Old West Innes Street and Institute, not far from the business.

According to an arrest warrant, the suspect stole $10 in cash. Lee remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond.
