Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

The following local residents were recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest all-discipline collegiate honor society:

• Mynia Snyder of Cleveland, University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

• Megan Hargis of China Grove, University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

• Barbara Kennedy of Kannapolis, East Carolina University.

• Matthew Collins of Salisbury, East Carolina University.

• Don Gray Jr. of Mount Pleasant, East Carolina University.

• Michelle Stevenson of Cleveland, East Carolina University.

• Kayla Blackburn of Salisbury, University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

• Shawna Robertson of Kannapolis, Queens University of Charlotte.

• Kym Vickers of Kannapolis, Queens University of Charlotte.

They are among nearly 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Millbridge Elementary School

Westminster Schools

ATLANTA — The Southern Association for College Admission Counseling honored Sarbeth Fleming, associate director of college counseling at Westminster Schools, with the Myron G. Burney Award for Inclusion and Access.

Fleming is a native of Kannapolis who attended Kannapolis City Schools before graduating from the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics in Durham. She earned degrees from Winston-Salem State University and the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in Columbus, Ohio.

According to the association, the award honors an administrator who has “made a significant impact in our field promoting inclusion and access.”

The accolade is named after Myron Burney, who helped underrepresented students attend college through his work at higher education institutions like Morehouse College, the University of Georgia, and the University of North Carolina.

Fleming is the mother of Naomi Fleming and granddaughter of Corine Lytle Cannon of Kannapolis.

West Rowan Elementary School
