Granite Quarry’s 62nd High School Class Reunion

Eighteen members (plus guests) of the Granite Quarry High School Class of 1957 met Friday, March 15 at Blue Bay East to commemorate our having graduated 62 years ago. Earlier we voted to end the dreaded money collection, program planning, food planning, etc. Now, the Blue Bay staff takes our individual orders allowing us to do what we do best — visit and talk with just a little routine business.

Our class is composed of students from Faith Elementary School (grades 1-8) and Granite Quarry (grades 1-12). We have always been compatible and as far as we know, none of us became criminals!

Class members present were George T. Baggett, Nancy Beaver Trexler, Eugene Cauble, J. E. Cauble, Carol Shenk Cauble, Leroy Earnhardt, Ruth Earnhardt Julian, Tom Jones, Mary Lois Kepley Koan, Nancy Kesler Beck, Jimmy Lyerly, Daniel Miller, Ruby Oddie Leazer, Mary Overcash York, Halena Park Heilig, Jerry Peeler, Nate Ribelin, and Michael Shive.

Those who traveled the greatest distance wer: Jerry Peeler, Vero Beach, Fla.; Daniel Miller, Oriental; and Nate Ribelin, Alpharetta, Ga.
Jimmy Lyerly welcomed us. Halena Heilig conducted a brief business session that included news from classmates who were not able to attend.

Nancy Trexler blessed the food after honoring those who died in 2018 — Libby Fraley Bame, Eunice Foster Goodman, David Fisher, and Larry Thomas. A total of 30 classmates have died.

We plan to see each other next year at noon on March 20 at Blue Bay East.

 

East Rowan High School Class of 1969 plans 50th reunion

Plans are being developed for a dinner at St. Matthews Lutheran Church. We are working on other activities around this date in October, also.

Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium, April 12-14

The Robert F. Hoke Chapter 78, UDC, has announced the slate of speakers for its 22nd annual Salisbury Confederate Prison Symposium, April 12-14.
Friday events begin with a 4 p.m. reception followed by lectures beginning at 5 p.m.

Speakers include Salisbury historians Ed and Sue Curtis; Larry Hines of Raleigh, descendant of Capt. Braxton Craven, the first Prison Commandant; and Dr. Dane Hartgrove of Salisbury, retired from the National Archives, as banquet keynote speaker.

Saturday’s lectures begin at 10 a.m. and feature POW descendant Mike DuMont of South Carolina; Author Dan Barefoot of Lincolnton; Author Martin Husk of Wake County; and Virginia author Tom Perry.

The Sunday morning memorial services conducted for the Union and Confederate dead buried in the Historic Salisbury National Cemetery and the Old Lutheran Cemetery are open to the public. An afternoon tour of the Prison site will be conducted for Symposium registrants.
