Catawba roundup …

MARS HILL — Catawba’s men’s basketball team  had no trouble with Mars Hill on Saturday.

Few road games in the SAC are easy, but this one was a breeze for the high-powered Indians, who romped 89-66.

Catawba (17-5, 10-4) led 50-24 at halftime.

Catawba used 14 players and got double-digit scoring from Jameel Taylor (19), Jordan McElveen (17),  Marcell Haskett (16) and Devin Cooper (10).

Catawba shot 52.5 percent and shot a solid 9-for-21 from the 3-point line.

Catawba is in third place in the league and is even with second-place Lincoln Memorial (16-6, 11-4) in the loss column.

Catawba plays at Coker on Wednesday.

Catawba women roll

MARS HILL — Talia Barnes had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Catawba’s women’s basketball team to   an 82-61 romp at Mars Hill.

Catawba (11-10, 6-8) crushed the Lions on the glass (49-29) in the South Atlantic Conference game and made 12 3-pointers.

Catawba struggled at the foul line (14-for-26) and turned it over 23 times, but still won easily against the last-place Lions (1-18, 0-14).

Madi Hallman added 17 points and five assists for the Indians, who stopped a  three-game skid.

Mariah Johnson led the Lions with 21 points.

Softball sweeps

SALISBURY — Catawba’s softball team won two against UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.

Catawba broke a 4-all tie in the sixth to take the opener, 7-4. Summer Howerton drove in the go-ahead run.

Leah Huggins and Sierrah McCarthy had three hits each.

Madison Hunter pitched three scoreless innings in relief and was the winning pitcher.

• In the second game,  Catawba (4-2) routed the Braves 9-0 in five innings.

Huggins had three more hits, and Jordan Dean went 3-for-3 with a homer. Carlee Brawley drove in two runs.

Brooke Walser pitched the shutout and struck out four with no walks.

Catawba is home for a doubleheader today against Virginia State at 1 p.m.

Baseball wins two

SALISBURY — Catawba swept a doubleheader against West Virginia State on Friday.

The score of both games was 10-3.

In the first game, Bryan Ketchie (2-0) pitched five innings and struck out five. He got the win.

Henderson Lentz and Heath Mitchem had three hits each. Lentz, Cameron Morrison and Robbie Cowie drove in two runs each.

• Sawyer Strickland struck out six in five innings for the win.

Zach Queen drove in three runs. Jackson Raper and Hunter Shepherd knocked in two apiece.

Catawba (6-1) plays Mars Hill in a doubleheader today at Newman Park, starting at 1 p.m.

Mars Hill (3-2) played West Virginia State at Newman Park on Saturday and the Lions took a doubleheader, 14-10 and 5-2.

Preseason All-American Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) homered in the first game.

SALISBURY — Catawba’s women won against Belmont Abbey, 7-0, on Saturday.

• Catawba’s men lost to Belmont Abbey, 5-2.
