The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will meet with its attorney Friday during a special called meeting to discuss a revised version of the mediated settlement agreement with Rowan County commissioners.

“I’m hoping that the actual document is going to be close to what we agreed on on the 27th so we can move on,” said school board Chairman Dr. Richard Miller, referring to the terms both boards agreed to during a joint meeting in February.

At the February meeting, commissioners said they wanted the final settlement agreement to be drawn up by their attorneys.

During its March 24 meeting, the Board of Education approved the settlement agreement produced by county attorneys.

The commissioners, however, weren’t happy with the final product and made 12 changes to the document before approving it at their meeting Monday.

The changes clarify that only one consolidated elementary school will be built in western Rowan County and remove the school board’s access to a source of funding for emergency needs.

Other changes affected site selection, the $500,000 refundable advance for project planning and additional capital project funding.

Because of these changes, the Board of Education called a special meeting to go over the revised document from county commissioners, according to Miller.

He said he didn’t think it was appropriate for him to comment on the commissioners’ changes yet.

“We need to look at it Friday morning,” he said.

Also on the agenda is a discussion about the school system’s 2014-15 budget request.

The school board already approved Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody’s proposal at a March 24 meeting, but will make any preparations necessary for Monday’s work session.

The special called meeting will be Friday at 8 a.m. at the school system administrative offices, 314 N. Ellis St.
