Area Sports Briefs: Carson’s Gadson commits to Anderson

Carson girls basketball standout McKenzie Gadson announced a commitment to Anderson University, a Division II South Atlantic Conference school.

Gadson, who plays for coach Brooke Stouder, had several offers, including one from Catawba.

The 5-foot-9 senior has scored more than 1,000 points for the Cougars. She’s made the last three all-county teams, second team as a freshman and first team the last two seasons.

Gadson averaged 12.8 points  and 5.4 rebounds as a junior, shooting 51 percent from the field for a 25-4 team that won several  championships.

Gadson also has starred in track and field and was named the Post’s Rowan County Athlete of the Year for the 2016-17 school year as a sophomore.

Local golf

Ray Letts made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Sunday.

Letts aced the 136-yard No. 10 hole with a 4-hybrid club. Howard Reeder and Bill Thompson witnessed the shot.

College golf

Catawba’s women finished eighth out of 17 teams at the Battle at Old South Women’s Golf Tournament.

After a record 299 on Saturday, Catawba fell off to a 326 on Sunday and finished  at 625.

Sarah Coltrane led Catawba and finished 22nd. She posted rounds of 73-79 — 152.  Kaley Barts was a shot back at 74-79 — 153.

At the Windon Memorial in Lake Forest, Ill., UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 76-76-75 — 227 and tied for 59th.

College football

Wesley Porter (East Rowan) made 11 tackles, had a pass breakup and had a 24-yard kick return in Sewanee’s 21-14 loss to Millsaps on Saturday.

Teoz Mauney (West Rowan) made four tackles for St. Augustine’s in Saturday’s 32-22 loss to Bowie State.

JaVon Lofton (West Rowan) has made four tackles in Averett’s two games.

Jaleel Webster (North Rowan) and Martavio Rankin (West Rowan) are on the Averett roster.

Freshman Jacob Young  (North Rowan) is handling punting duties for Fayetteville State. He’s averaging  36.7 yards  on nine punts with a long of 49.

Offensive linemen K.J. Wilson (West Rowan) and Derrick Moreland  (West Rowan) played for Hampton in Saturday’s loss to Northern Iowa.

Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) is the leading rusher for Gardner-Webb with 68 carries for 232 yards. He’s scored three TDs.

QB Kacey Otto (West Rowan) has rushed for 86 yards and thrown for 140 in three games for St. Andrews.  He has one passing TD.

Jamorya Cousin, who played at South Rowan before moving to Virginia, is the leading rusher for UVa-Wise with 79 carries for  481 yards in four games and one TD.

Justin Ruffin (Salisbury) is the leading rusher for Livingstone with 35 carries for 172 yards and two TDs in three games. He had a 44-yard run.

SAC players of the week are   Mars Hill wide receiver Craig Rucker, Wingate defensive end Cardell Rawlings  and Newberry kicker Shea Rodgers.

College soccer

Catawba’s women lost for the first time on Saturday, losing to SAC opponent Lincoln Memorial, 2-0, at Frock Field.

Catawba (6-1) is home against UNC Pembroke on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

College volleyball

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 55 assists, 14 digs and three aces in Saturday’s five-set SAC loss to Mars Hill.

Local tennis

Ben Childress played in the USTA Mooresville Bring the Heat level 5 tournament over the weekend.

He won his semifinal 6-1, 6-0 and rolled 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match.  

Jayvee volleyball

Makali Strong had five kills and eight digs as South Rowan beat North Davidson 25-19 and 25-18.

Kendall Walter had four kills. Kali Nelson had six digs for South (10-6, 8-4 CCC). Emma Owens had six assists.

Carson won against East Rowan 25-6 and 25-8.

Grace Goldstein had two aces for Carson. Alayna Slusser had two aces and six kills Tate Barger had 14 assists. Ava Corriher had eight aces and three kills.

Varsity volleyball

Carson won against East Rowan 25-18, 25-15 and 25-14 in North Piedmont Conference volleyball on Monday.

Mallory Weast  had four aces, nine digs and seven kills for the Cougars (12-2, 3-1).

Jaden Vaughn had 12 digs and 11 kills. Kary Hales had 22 digs. Nancy Gamewell had seven kills. Alicia Thompson and Ella Cloninger had two aces each. Grace Thomas had 23 assists.

Weast has topped 1,000 career kills. A story is upcoming.

• Olivia Wright had nine kills and 10 digs for the Mustangs. Baleigh Hill had 21 digs. Hannah Larson had five kills.

West Rowan lost in five sets at South Iredell in a battle for first place in the NPC. The Vikings  (12-1, 4-0) won 25-9, 17-25, 32-30, 20-25 and 15-8.

Tori Hester had 21 kills and 26 digs for the Falcons (12-2, 3-1). KK Dowling had 16 kills and 22 digs. Ava Link had 10 kills and 49 assists. Carly Stiller had seven kills, while Kelcie Love had six.

In CCC volleyball, Lexington won against Salisbury in five sets on Monday.

The Yellow Jackets prevailed 18-25. 25-9, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-11 for their first win in league play.

High school tennis

South Rowan won against West Davidson, 8-1, in Monday’s Central Carolina Conference match.

Singles winners for South were Lauren Shell, Jamie Minehart, Emma Leazer, Brianna Weatherwax and Jennifer Mysayakhom.

   Doubles winners were Shell/Kristen Minehart, J. Minehart/Weatherwax and Leazer/ Mysayakhom.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin’s girls defeated Knox, 9-0.

Audrey Ward, Anna Hedenskog, Cindy Peterson, Abbey Jarem, Landyn Kesler and Allie Martin won singles matches.

Ward/Belton, Hedenskog/Stone and Peterson/Martin were winning doubles teams for the Eagles.
