SALISBURY — City officials say Livingstone College students are at risk because of ongoing fire code violations at the campus.
Livingstone has had more than 1,000 violations in the past four years with $63,152 in unpaid fines. Fire Chief Bob Parnell called it the worst lack of commitment to safety he has ever seen.
The college currently has 39 violations, city officials said.
Livingstone President Dr. Jimmy Jenkins said he was dumbfounded after he learned about the presentation at Tuesday’s City Council meeting and blindsided by accusations that the college is not cooperating.
Jenkins said Livingstone has worked diligently to eradicate fire code violations and cooperate with city officials.
“As president of the college, clearly my first priority is to make sure the students are safe and the campus is safe,” he told the Post. “Whatever we have been asked to do, we have attempted to do it.”
