SALISBURY — Salisbury held off West Rowan, 4-2, in non-conference boys soccer on Tuesday.

The Hornets (2-0) were challenged by the Falcons (0-1). It was 2-all late in the first half before Eric Arquett scored the tiebreaking goal that put Salisbury ahead to stay.

Salisbury jumped out early, 2-0,  on goals by Axel Alejo and Luke Holland.

A gaffe on a Salisbury free kick led to a  West counter, and Jose Guerrero  scored on an assist from Aleksis Suarez.

That goal turned momentum and West quickly scored again for a 2-all tie. Esteban Trujillo scored the  second West goal. It was set up by Alen Muskic and Stevenson Lopez.

Arquett scored his key goal with four minutes left in the half for a 3-2 SHS edge.

The only goal of the second half was converted by Holland on a set piece.

“We made adjustments at halftime and our midfield was more balanced in the second half,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury keeper Josh Faulkner had eight saves. Jack Fisher had three assists, while Bryan Garcia contributed one.

Jacob Joseph and Diego Menendez split time in goal for the Falcons.

“I think we were fatigued some from playing Monday (a 7-2 win against East Rowan,” Parrish said. “West out-worked us for significant portions of the match.”

Salisbury plays at West Stanly on Monday at 6 p.m. That’s  a team the Hornets lost to early in the 2017 season.

   West Rowan plays Robinson at home on Thursday.

Davie County lost to Western Guilford, 3-0, on Tuesday.

Prep volleyball

West Rowan’s volleyball team won again on Tuesday, sweeping Mooresville 25-17, 25-11 and 25-12.

Tori Hester had 14 kills and 12 digs in the nonc-conference matchup. KK Dowling had 10 kills and 12 digs. Hannah Pratt had 12 digs.

Ava Link had 19 assists, while Allison Ennis had 14 assists.

Mooresville is 1-1.

West’s jayvees (1-1) lost to the Blue Devils.

Davie County opened the season on Tuesday with a sweep of West Davidson.

Karlee Efird had eight kills to lead Albemarle to a 25-19,  25-20 and 25-17 Yadkin Valley Conference win against North Rowan on Tuesday.

Prep girls golf

In girls golf on Tuesday at Sapona Ridge, Oak Grove and Davie County shot 155. Ledford shot 158, and North Davidson shot 159.

Local golf

East Rowan grad Nick Lyerly (UNC Greensboro) shot 71-81 — 152, 9-over in the U.S. Amateur.

The cutline fell at 4-over.

Only the top 64 golfers advance to match play. A playoff today will decide the 64th berth.

After turning in a strong round at Pebble Beach on Monday that put him in contention, Lyerly played Spyglass Hill on Tuesday. He started on No. 10. He made three bogeys and one birdie on the back side and made the turn at 2-over 38.

But he encountered a tough stretch on the front nine, with a bogey on No. 3, a triple bogey on No. 4 and a double bogey on No. 5. He recovered to par three of his last four holes.

Will Gordon (Cannon School, Vanderbilt)  shot 69-70 — 139  (4-under) to advance to match play. Gordon tied for fourth.

Fifty-nine GARS members played the second round of their annual ABCD  tournament at Lexington Golf Club.

‘A’ Flight winner was Red McClain with a net of 64.21. ‘A’ Flight low gross winner was Bernard Caldwell.

‘B’ Flight winner was Lou Manning with a net of 67.09. ‘B’ Flight low gross winner was Buddy Barger.

‘C’ Flight winner  was Mike Sides with a net of 66.55. ‘C’ Flight low gross winner was Ralph Luther.

‘D’ Flight winner was Floyd McVey with a net of 68.61. ‘D’  Flight low gross winner was Bert Bollinger.

Three members shot their age or better. Clive Mahaffey, 83, shot an 83;  Barger, 84, shot an 82, and Manning, 84, shot an 84.

Low gross winner was Caldwell with a 73, and low net winner was McClain.

The Corbin Hills ladies played a low gross/low net tournament. Overall low gross winner was Susan Morris. Beth Calhoun won overall low net.

Treva Honeycutt won First Flight low net, while Cathy Flemong won Second Flight low net. Mary Seaford won low putts.

Carolina Waves

The Carolina Waves, one of the country’s premier youth basketball programs, will hold tryouts for rising 10th and 11th grade girls on Sunday, Aug. 19.

The Carolina Waves, a Raleigh-based program will start a team in the local area beginning this fall.

Brian Perry, boys varsity head coach at Carson, will coach the Waves.
