The Salisbury Symphony jazzes it up

The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra jazzes things up with the trio performing on their Pops Concert Saturday, May 2.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Keppel Auditorium at Catawba College.
Since the concert is the same day as the running of the Kentucky Derby, Music Director David Hagy has scheduled a composition by William Bolcom called “Seattle Slew!” (named for the last horse to win the Triple Crown).
Bolcom is an American composer and pianist who has received a Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts, and two Grammy Awards. The three parts of the composition are titled “Derby Dressage,” “Preakness Prance,” and “Belmont Breeze.”
There will be other equestrian-themed music, including the finale of Rossini’s William Tell Overture which is recognized by many as the “Lone Ranger” theme.
A jazz trio will join the Symphony to perform Concerto for Jazz Piano Trio and Orchestra by Claude Bolling.
Federico Pivetta, pianist, Matt Kendrick, bassist, and Jakubu Griffin, percussion, all live in the Piedmont, but this is the first time they have played together as a jazz trio. And, though their names may not be familiar (yet), they have each played with jazz “greats” in their careers: Harry “Sweets” Edison, Buddy Defranco, Eddie “Doc” Henderson, Percy Sledge, Archie Shepp, Marian McPartland, Ernie Watts, and Arturo Sandoval are among the names. For jazz-lovers, this will be a special treat.
This concert is sponsored by Piedmont Radiological Associates, long-time Symphony supporters.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors (age 60 and older), $6 for students (ages 9-18), and $4 for children. Group discounts are available for groups of ten or more. The box office opens at 6:30, the afternoon of the concert, and everyone is invited to a reception following the concert, hosted by the Salisbury Symphony Guild.
Tickets are available by calling 704-637-4314, or visiting a ticket outlet: Belk at Salisbury Mall, Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sidewalk Deli, A Step In Time, Escape the Daily Grind in Spencer, and Crescent Pharmacy in Rockwell.
