SPENCER — Original equipment from the early days of Old Dominion Freight Line arrived at the N.C. Transportation Museum on Wednesday.

Old Dominion has been in operation for more than 80 years, growing from a small company making deliveries along a 94-mile stretch of Virginia roadway to a global powerhouse with some 20,000 employees.

The loaned equipment, which rolled into the museum’s Backshop on Wednesday morning, includes two trucks:

• A 1947 Ford Straight Truck originally used at the company’s service center in Virginia and first restored in 1984 to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary. The company uses it primarily for parades, charity events, and employee parties.

• A 1950 White Mustang, a replica truck restored to the look and condition of the truck Old Dominion co-founder Earl Congdon drove between Richmond and Newport News, Virginia. The original trailer that was used on those runs was found, in rough shape with a tree growing through it. The trailer was restored with new sheet metal, wood floors and restored doors and now accompanies the Mustang.
