Recently (Nov 20) my husband had an experience we hadn’t expected. It was his birthday and I wondered what we could do to make it special. Our neighbor, Ashley, an Erwin Middle School student, had given him an invitation to an East Rowan Community Schools Veterans Appreciation Dinner and Concert at East Rowan High School.

What a surprise we got!

When we entered the cafeteria, we were greeted by a double line of elementary students, and each veteran was pinned with a ribbon held by a double-flag lapel pin. The tables had hand-made flag-styled placemats and “Thank you for your service” cards at each place.

Students came over and spoke with us, acknowledging my husband for his service. They listened as we shared our experiences (I was an Air Force dependent of my father’s for 18 years).

The meal was prepared with pride and so good.

Someone announced that a veteran was celebrating a birthday and all sang “Happy Birthday.” He will remember this birthday for the rest of his life.

In the auditorium, a sharply dressed JROTC presented the colors and led in the pledge. We were entertained by the East Rowan Chorus, the Men’s Choir, the East Rowan Combined Bands and the Chorus and Wind Ensemble. They played the hymn of each branch of service, with the veterans standing and being recognized. All applauded our veterans, our nation and our community.

I am proud to be a part of the community and thankful that the students were aware that we need to remember those who have served, those who presently are protecting us, and those who will one day answer the call of duty.
