SPENCER — David Smith is seeking a sixth term on the Spencer Board of Aldermen.

Smith, 72, has been appointed to the board three times and has been elected twice.

“I just feel that I owe this service to the town of Spencer,” he said of his choice to run again.

Smith said he’d like to “see what we can do” in the future.

In his bid for re-election, Smith is focusing on issues such as marketing potential properties to businesses or companies. More job opportunities would not only benefit the town financially but might encourage students graduating from North Rowan schools to stay in their hometown, he said.

“That’s one of my concerns, that our children are having to leave town,” he said.

Smith said he’d also like to see updated Christmas decorations for the town, improvement in North area schools and a return of the Spencer Jaycees.

“I just see a lot of good things that are ready to happen, and I want to be a part of them,” he said.

Smith is a transplant to Spencer, moving here in 1987. He is a retired Army veteran.

Smith earned degrees from Central Carolina Community College, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and Miller Ferry Science and Technical School.

He is a member of the Salisbury Transit Authority, the Salisbury VFW and the Kennedy Hall American Legion.
